GLOBE Phenology Investigation Budburst 2002 & 2007 Model Secondary School for the Deaf

Observing two tree species  Silver Maple  Acer saccharinum Crab Apple Pyrus coronaria

We began observations on Feb 20, 2007

Daily observations

Silver Maple flowers March 12, 2007 March 14, anthers

Crab Apple budburst Flowers & leaves burst by Mar 17 Swelling March 15

A late snow… April 7 In Indiana, students reported that this snow killed the Crab Apple blossoms. Silver Maple Crab Apple

Silver Maple Leaves burst #3 bud burst on April 11

Measuring the Leaf growth every day

Bud and leaf drawings

Temperature data

Precipitation data

What we have learned….  “I was not aware of budburst before.”  Data showed differences in 2002 and 2007  Maple budburst was delayed in 2007  The two tree species had different patterns  Different species respond differently to the environment

What we learned…  Flower buds respond differently than leaf buds.  Cold temperatures delayed the Crab Apple but did not seem to change the Maple.
