Teen Living Objective 12.0-12.02 Fashion Construction Teen Living Objective 12.0-12.02

12.01 Operate sewing and pressing equipment.

12.00 Use basic fashion construction procedures to produce personal clothing and home accessories

Pins vs. Needles Pins hold fabric, while needles bring thread through

Sewing Tools Tracing Wheel: Used to transfer markings from a pattern to fabric Seam Ripper: Used to remove unwanted stitches from a seam Pin Cushion: the best place to hold pins while sewing or to store pins when not in use Tape Measure: Used to measure various lengths such as sleeve, inseam, waist

Sewing Tools, continued Scissors/Shears: Most basic and necessary tool for cutting; close when not in use Pinking Shears: Used to finish the edge of fabric Thimble: used for hand sewing

Sewing Machine Needles should be replaced when they become bent, damaged, or rusty The feed moves the fabric (feed dog is the name of the two small rows of metal teeth) The presser foot keeps the fabric securely in place while stitching The bobbin provides thread for the bottom side of the stitch Thread guides keep thread from tangling

Use your handout to fill in the information about the parts of a sewing machine

Sewing Machine Parts (write info on your sewing machine handout) 1. Power Switch: Turns power on/off 2. Presser foot: Helps hold fabric in place to keep stitches in a straight line. 3. Presser foot lifter: Lever to raise and lower presser foot. 4. Throat plate: Placed directly under the needle; it has guideline marking to help keep stitching straight. 5. Feed dogs: Rise through the throat plate and use a tooth-like surface to move fabric forward with each stitch. 6. Needle: Used to pierce fabric and draw thread through to sew. 7. Thread take-up lever: Keeps thread feeding evenly thorough the needle. 8. Upper tension regulator: Regulates how tightly the thread is pulled as a stitch is formed. 9. Thread guide: Hold thread in place. 10. Spool pin: Holds spool of thread. 11. Bobbin winder: Holds bobbin to fill with thread. 12. Balance wheel: Turns to raise and lower the take-up lever and needle. 13. Stitch length regulator: Used to adjust stitch length. 14. Stitch width regulator: Used to adjust stitch width for a zigzag stitch. 15. Bobbin case/bobbin: Holds the bobbin and the tension adjustment for the lover threads.

Ironing/Pressing Ironing: Glides iron back and forth Pressing: Use press cloth to prevent shine on fabric Sleeve pressing roll and tailors ham

12.02 Perform basic construction procedures

The Pattern Step-by-step instructions for cutting, marking, which pieces to use, and sewing are found on the pattern guide sheet Place the pins perpendicular to the fold and cutting lines, when pinning a pattern to fabric Pin through the pattern piece and fabric Place tracing paper on both of the wrong sides of the fabric and put enough pressure on the tracing wheel to transfer the markings

Cutting Use long even strokes to cut fabric The solid dark line on the pattern is the cutting line Cut around the diamond shapes (notches) on the cutting line The notches are used to match pattern pieces with one another

Stitches… Can be adjusted with the stitch width control on a sewing machine Seam allowance should be 5/8” Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to secure it When sewing a seam watch the edge of the fabric and the guideline

Fabric Care instructions can be found on the bolt Cut out all pattern pieces and lay out following the pattern guide sheet

Hemming First: Mark where the new hem should be.

Buttons It is best to use two strands of thread when sewing on a button Shank button allows for room when the button is closed To form a thread shank, wind the thread around the stitches under the button several times

Finished Edges Pinking shears can be used to create a seam finish
