Extra-Curricular Drug Testing Process Midway High School Midway Middle School

The purpose of this process is NOT to “catch” a student using drugs, but instead to give students a valid reason for choosing to NOT use drugs, tobacco or alcohol. You, the student, have the power and the right to choose Panther sports, clubs and EC activities over illegal drugs!

Random Selection  A database of all students participating in extracurricular programs is submitted to the company that performs our drug tests. The company randomly chooses the list of students to be tested each month.  Students selected one month will still be in the testing pool for the following month and could possibly be chosen again.

Testing Area  The testing areas will be segregated by gender.  The testing areas will be located out of the mainstream area of the school  Personnel from the drug-testing laboratory shall collect urine samples under conditions that are no more intrusive than the conditions experienced in a public restroom

Reporting to testing area  Report immediately to the testing area when you receive your hall pass  Bring your ID!! A school issued ID or drivers’ license must be shown for proof of identity  You will be checked in by a MISD staff member and will then be directed to a testing company employee who will explain the procedure for specimen collection  Once collected, the specimen remains in the custody of the testing company with appropriate paperwork

What if I can’t “go”?  Students are provided water to drink, and instructed to walk and remain active to help produce sample needed  Students remain in the testing area under supervision for up to 2 hours from check-in.  After the two hour window, student will be escorted to the AP’s office to contact parent/guardian to the AP’s office to contact parent/guardian  A student who refuses to be tested when selected or who is determined to have tampered with a sample shall be issued an “automatic positive result” and will be subject to the same consequences as if a positive test had resulted. If a student is absent on the day of the random test, a sample shall be collected on the next random testing date.

Positive Results  The Drug Testing company contacts school coordinator with the names of students with positive results.  If student is in athletics, the head coach will be notified of positive result and will contact parent/guardian. If student is not in athletics, MHS principal will be notified of positive result and will notify sponsor of extra-curricular activity.  Some positive tests are a result of prescribed medication; parents will be asked to confirm that the medication is indeed a prescribed medication from a medical doctor

Positive Results con’t.  Positive results from cocaine and marijuana do not have a medical equivalent and “are what they are”!  If a parent asks that a second test be done for confirmation, it will be at the parent’s expense and at a certified lab of their choice. The same 72 hr./3 working day window applies for this process as well.

When a Student Tests Positive…  Student will be issued a strike and will be suspended for 10% of their upcoming extracurricular events.  Student will be drug tested for the next three random periods.  If a student tests positive again within the next 3 periods, a 2 nd strike will be issued and student will be unable to participate in any extracurricular activities for one calendar year from the date of the 2 nd strike.

Epilogue  If your “friends” do not or cannot value your decision to NOT do drugs, tobacco or alcohol, then the question for you is…do they value…you?  Your choices matter… everyday… 24/7…and those choices define you as a person.
