 A chemical reaction changes the properties and energy of the old substances into a new substance.  A chemical reaction involves a rearrangement of atoms.  Chemical Equations : Show Changes that take place in a chemical reaction.  EXAMPLE : AgNO 3 (aq)+ NaCl (aq)  AgCl(s) + NaNO 3 (aq) Reactants Yield Products  Reactants : The chemicals you start with  Products : The chemicals you end up with  Conservation of Mass : You must have the same amount of each element at the beginning and the end of a reaction. Elements cannot appear or disappear!

“Getting Together” Girl A + Boy B  Couple AB

A + B  AB Examples: 2 H 2 + O 2  2 H 2 O SO 3 + H 2 O  H 2 SO 4

“Breaking Up” Couple AB  Girl A + Boy B

AB  A + B Examples: 2 KClO 3  2 KCl + 3 O 2 2 H 2 O  2 H 2 + O 2

“Couple/Single Switcheroo” Couple AB + Boy C  Couple AC + Boy B

A + BC  AC + B Examples: Zn + Cu(NO 3 ) 2  Zn(NO 3 ) 2 + Cu

“Couple/Couple Switcheroo” Couple AB + Couple CD  Couple AD + Couple CB

AB + CD  AD + CB Examples: AgNO 3 + NaCl  AgCl + NaNO 3
