WHAT IS DIGITAL DIVIDE? IT IS A TERM THAT REFERS TO THE GAP BETWEEN DEMOGRAPHICS AND REGIONS THAT HAVE ACCESS TO MODERN INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, AND THOSE THAT DON'T OR HAVE RESTRICTED ACCESS.

BACKGROUND The history of digital dates back to when people could only communicated via TELEPHONE TELEVISION PERSONAL COMPUTERS

ACCESS The rich can afford internet access and advancements in technology. However the poorer members of society aren’t able to afford internet access payments and IT equipment.

THE LANGUAGE BARRIER There is a significant problem with the available languages on the internet, thus causing a communication barrier for certain countries. South African has 11 official languages but the internet has mostly English. Children at schools are still taught in either English or their home language.

PRICE OF DATA IN SOUTH AFRICA South Africa was ranked 30th out of 46 "as having the most expensive pre- paid mobile tariffs among African countries“ a country with millions living in poverty. UNEMPLOYMENT /DIGITAL DIVIDE Infrastructure in rural areas magnifies the impact of the digital divide on the lives of low literacy levels, high rates of unemployment and lower levels of income. Many companies are moving their activities onto the internet, and new businesses are being developed that operate purely on the internet.

DIGITAL DIVIDE IMPACTS ON EDUCATION Computer skills are now a requirement for any college student. Minorities or students from low-income families may not be able to enter college with insufficient technology background. Even students who can get accepted to college may not be able to finish due to a lack of computer skills
