What Do the Common Core State Standards Have to Say About ELLs? All students should be held to the same high expectations outlined in KCAS including ELLs. Students come from a variety of language levels and educational backgrounds. Students may require additional time, instructional support, aligned assessments.
ELLs and English Language Arts ELLs should have access to: Literacy –rich environments Instruction in foundational skills Coursework that prepares ELLs for postsecondary education Opportunities for classroom discourse and interaction that are well-designed to develop communicative skills. Ongoing assessment and feedback Access to speakers of English who can serve as models and provide support.
