What is happening on May 7 th ? Do you know what vital event for our country is occurring on May 7 th ? The Elections. This presentation will tell you what you need to know about this years Elections; so you know who you will be voting for and who you think will make a change for the better.

What is Democracy? The British Parliament is based on Democracy, Democracy means that ordinary people have a say in what the government does. It’s a process that allows voters to decide how their country and community should be run.

Parliament 750 years ago the first parliament was introduced. The Houses of Parliament is where the laws and regulations are discussed and passed. A law is a rule made by parliament to tell us what we can and cannot do.

What is Representative Democracy? Representative Democracy is the most common democracy, British citizens choose their representatives via an election.

Who can vote? How can they vote? To vote you must be over 18 and a British Citizen. In the UK, there are three different ways you can vote. Most people vote in person at a polling station. However, if you are not able to go to the polling station in person on election day, you can apply to vote by post or by proxy (where someone votes on your behalf). 18+

Why should you vote? It is important for people to vote so that their voices can be heard and so that their opinions can be taken into account, also that they don’t voluntarily exclude themselves from the democratic process.

Party Leaders Nick Clegg Is the leader of the Liberal Democrats. Edward Milliband Is the leader of the Labour Party. David Cameron Is the leader of the Conservative Party.

The Magna Carta Magna Carta, meaning ‘The Great Charter’, is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally issued by King John of England as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215, The Magna Carta was established for the first time. In principle a set of rules that everybody, including the king, was subject and had to obey the law.

Women’s votes Nowadays in the UK, women have the same rights as men, but that wasn't always the case. In the early 20th century women didn't have the same rights as men - they couldn't vote in elections and the vast majority could only get jobs as house servants. The battle for equality lasted a long time. Emmeline Pankhurst is considered one of the leaders of the suffragette movement in Great Britain. Emmeline Pankhurst was born in 1858 and died in 1928.

Victoria United Another Political party is ‘Victoria United’. They are campaigning for free transport for children. Other policies include: they are hoping to improve and fund are medicines for health and reduce crime.

Equality Equality is also another party. They want to give more money to the NHS and make Britain a place where everyone is equal. They promise to find and put a stop to all ‘taxevadors’. Make school dinners free for children of all ages and decrees tax by 5p! But who will you vote?
