Charts and Diagrams

Sparrows and pigeons sit on a fence. When 5 sparrows leave, there remain 2 pigeons for every sparrow. Then 25 pigeons leave and the ratio of sparrows to pigeons becomes 3:1. What is the original number of birds?

Think One

If 1 and ½ woodchucks can chuck 1 and 1/3 cords of wood in 1 and ¼ hours, how many cords of wood can 1 woodchuck chuck in 1 hour?

PATTERNS, SEQUENCES, and FUNCTION MACHINES

A lily pad grows so that each day it doubles its size. On the 20 th day of its life, it completely covers the pond. On what day of its life was the pond half covered?

VENN DIAGRAMS

A Venn diagram is used to organize information so that the brain can more easily understand and analyze it.

In a school that has 20 teachers, 10 teach humanities, 8 teach social studies, and 6 teach science. Two teach both humanities and social studies, but none teaches both social studies and science. How many teach both humanities and science?

You will need two circles.

 Overlap them  The 4 is placed in the intersection of the 2 circles because 4 children have been to both countries.  Since Mexico’s circle must add up to 7, a 3 is placed inside the circle  Because Canada’s circle must add up to 11, a 7 is placed inside the circle  Fourteen children are in the circles, so 15 have not been to either country

In a group of 30 high school students, 8 take French, 12 take Spanish, and three take both languages. How many students in the group take neither French nor Spanish?

In a group of 22 students, 7 children like math, 12 children like science, 6 children like English, 3 like math and science, 2 like English and math, 2 like science and English, and 1 student likes all three subjects. How many students don’t like any subject?
