2 nd Grade

Check out your child’s work Write letter to your child Our Classroom County-wide information

Growing up, my family always moved because my father works for UPS. I have lived in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Georgia. I still consider myself a Southern girl! I graduated from Lee University in May 2015 with my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. I am from a family of teachers and my mother teaches 3 rd grade at Brookwood.

Your child should bring home a “Take Home” folder each night. Please check those for homework and important information. Newsletter will now be on a blog link, since some of you couldn’t access Microsoft Powerpoint on your home computers! Communication is key for a great year! Please feel free to contact me at any time with comments, questions, or concerns.

Please make sure if your child brings lunch money, that it is in an envelope with his/her name, teacher’s name, and amount is written on it. Please send any tardy or attendance s to Laurie Tuttle at: Transportation – Please make sure that your child brings in a note if there is a change of transportation. A child cannot change buses because of established routes. Unfortunately, we cannot accept phone calls or s about transportation changes.

Please make sure your child has only one snack per day. This snack needs to be “healthy” and small. Children may have water bottles, but please no other drinks.

After Labor Day, your child will start having homework everyday except Friday. They will be completing one page of a homework packet each night and will also be reading 20 minutes per night, answering one question about their reading based on reading standards.

Your child probably started Kendore Kingdom phonics program last year if they went to Shiloh. We are continuing the program this year, so your child will be receiving a list of “criminal words” each week, which are sight words. We will also be reviewing certain phonics patterns each week, which your child will be tested on. There will be no spelling words for the phonics patterns, but they will be able to spell these words based off of what we are learning each week. They will be dictating sentences that include the Criminal Words and phonics pattern, which will be considered their spelling test each week.

I have high expectations for all students to do their very best each day! Please support these expectations at home by allowing your child to take responsibility for their actions and work. I really want for students to be in charge of their own learning, so students will be working with me to set goals and determine actions that need to be taken to reach their goals.

We are doing whole group lessons for reading, phonics, grammar, & vocabulary. We are also doing the “Daily 5” which include: read to self, read with partner, word work, listen to reading, & writing. During this time, I will be pulling groups aside to work on specific reading areas with your child.

Students will be involved in daily writing activities to boost their skills as thinkers & communicators. We will be writing in all subject areas, but we will also have specific writing focuses such as: narratives, persuasive, etc.

Money to $10, Place Value to 1000, Time to 5 minutes, Comparing and Ordering Numbers, Patterns, Fractions, Geometry, Graphing, and Word Problems (No Book, Only Practice Book), Automatic Recall of Addition/Subtraction Facts up to 18 Variety of experiences - children “do” math Skill Reinforcement through: Practice, Enrichment, Problem Solving, Math Games, Manipulatives, Number Talks

Science: life cycles, astronomy, matter, forces & motion Social Studies: Georgia regions, elected officials & landmarks, Native American cultures of GA (Cherokee & Creek), supply & demand, and famous Georgians

Have a happy Thursday!
