History Over the centuries Ventspils has been known as the major transportation route for Russian cargo like oil, oil products, liquid chemicals, different metals, fertilisers and wood products. During the first period of Latvia’s independence Ventspils losts its significance and began to stagnate. The port and the city were substantially damaged also during the 2nd World War.
