Tools A mechanical device intended to make a specific task easier Tools come in all shapes and sizes, some are hand powered and others are motorized or mechanical in nature What is important is knowing which tool to use for a specific job Using the wrong tool can have the reverse affect, actually making a task harder and could lead to a safety hazard 2 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

History of Tools Ancient man is believed to have invented the first tool and started to use tools to perform various tasks Many of these tools were for tasks of necessity, such as hunting, fishing, or protection (weapons) The first tools were believed to be for cutting or smashing, such as a modern day knife or hammer As time went on, their uses grew to become more common and for everyday use 3 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

History of Tools Now, tools are a given and you probably use many tools everyday without thinking about them Even animals use tools, not as developed as humans, but tools none the less It has become increasingly easy to produce new and better tools, with the use of other tools We will focus on the types of tools used for construction carpentry 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Tool Quality One of the issues almost all carpenters may bring up, is tool quality You should select tools of good quality that will last and successfully complete the task at hand Quality does not necessarily mean the most expensive Over time and experience, you will be able to identify quality tools 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Hand Tools are devices used for performing work on a material or a physical system using only hands to operate These can include: framing hammer, tape measure, speed square, chalk line, chisel, carpenter’s pencil, framing square, utility knife, tool pouch, etc. These tools are usually smaller than power tools and not as dangerous by themselves Hand tools can usually be carried on a person or in a tool pouch They could become dangerous if not used properly 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Power Tools are tools powered by an electric motor, a compressed air motor, or a gasoline engine These can include; framing nailer, circular saw, electric drill, reciprocating saw, etc. These tools take extra care and safety precautions to utilize properly These tools usually have a cord attached or power source, such as a battery The cords, batteries, and power of the tools make them very useful as well as dangerous Extra care must be taken to not leave these types of tools unattended 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Tool Safety There are many safety rules and regulations to follow when using tools As technology has progressed over the years, tool safety has increased Tools are now created with their safety features built in or kept in mind while designing Basically, you should always respect the power of a tool and never play around with a tool They are meant for one purpose and one purpose only 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Future of Tools With the ever growing change in technology, tools are also changing Not only are the materials used for building evolving, the tool also has to evolve for the job You used to only need a hammer and nails to build a house; now with modern metal materials, you need powered framing nailers and reciprocating saws As time goes on, we may even need everyday tools that work in space Can you imagine what tools of the future will look like? 9 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Tool education It is important to stay current with tool technology Usually what drives the need for tools is the need for building materials, not only for construction but manufacturing also Websites, construction publications and watching current trends can help to predict and prepare for the future Professionals have to keep educated in this area to stay ahead of the game 10 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
