Writing a Resume

What Is a Resume? A life’s worth of experience and education summarized in one or two pages – that’s a resume. Designed to get you a job.

What Does A Resume Look Like? A resume is organized into sections. The information you share falls under general headings. The headings are typed in bold. The font for a resume is 12. Use bulleted lists for your facts.

First Things First The first thing on a resume is your personal information. It does not require a heading. Name Address Phone Number address

Job Objective or Job Goal This is the first heading. This is where you briefly say what you want to do/what you are looking for. E.G. A position providing friendly and reliable customer service in retail.

Education This is the second heading. This is where you list the schools you have attended. List the most recent first present Bedford South School Basinview Drive Community School.

Work Experience or Work History List you work experience beginning with your most recent job: Mowed lawn and shoveled snow for several neighbours Provided after school care for two. elementary school children.

Volunteer Experience List volunteer activities: Assistant coach, U10 Soccer Member of Student Leadership Team

Interests and Hobbies Member of Under 14 Scotia Olympics, Tier 1 Team Avid reader Piano – Completed Level 8 Canadian Conservatory

References Include a list of 3 people who can be contacted to vouch for you. Be sure to ask before you include a reference. Include their names, addresses, and phone numbers: Name, Name, Principal Bedford South School 2 Oceanview Drive Bedford, NS. B2A 3J2

Ways to Write a Loser Resume Use crayons to give it colour. Get them to find 10 misspelled words. Use your Mom as a reference. Use construction paper. Under Skills list how many times you’ve been grounded. Show them how good you are at using white out. Under Activities write Sleep In.

Basic Facts to Remember Resumes aren’t wordy. Get to the point. Do not include personal information like marital status, age, race or social insurance number. You have all of 30 seconds to make your case to the person reading your resume.

Final Words Absolutely no mistakes, no white-out, no typos or misspelling; have others proof it for readability. Don't trust spell check, a word may be spelled correctly but doesn't make cents. (sense). Get the point. Spell out months, names of cities, streets, provinces - don't abbreviate.

Final, Final Words A12 point Times Roman or Arial font is recommended. Do not mix fonts on one resume - stick with one. Boldface your sections and headings. Only use two or three maximum indents throughout the resume. Keep it clean and simple.
