Is this healthy?

Does anyone have a PERFECT (equal-sided) triangle?

associated with the body (exercise, diet, rest, hygiene)

Associated with your feelings and emotions (self esteem)

Relating to others (family, friends, clubs, teams)

Who is responsible for your health? My health is my responsibility –Heredity and environment have an impact but I have the most control over my well being in the decisions that I make –Health Education—providing health information in such a way to influence people to change attitudes and behaviors and take positive actions towards their health

Quantity vs. Quality of Life Quantity is life expectancy –the average # of years a group of people are expected to live (depends on : gender, heredity, environment, culture, access to medical care and basic health habits) –1900- In U.S. it was 49 years –2006—77.6 years (U.S.) –Contrast with Ethiopia years

Quantity of life In 1900 leading causes of death were: pneumonia, flu, tuberculosis (TB)— communicable diseases—spread from person to person Now leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, stroke, --(noncommunicable diseases) caused by life-style factors! Leading cause of death for 15-24: accidents, murderers, suicide, cancer

Quality of life Level of health and satisfaction and meaning that a persons life has Being able to function at optimal levels of mental, physical, and social well being How does a person achieve both the quality of life as well as quantity? Life style factors and risk factors

Decision Making and Relationships Mr. Hair Health

FOCUS: List every decision that you have made today.

Decisions Defined Decision- the act of making a choice or coming to a solution –decisions can be small: what shoes to wear to the dance –decisions can be large: should I try drugs, should I have sex, what do I want to do after high school

Reasonable Risks Risk: a behavior with an element of danger that may cause injury or harm –there are risks in everyday life: crossing the street –reasonable risk is one in which the likely-hood of damaging your or someone else’s health are low trying out for the school play or basketball team, asking someone to the school dance

Unreasonable Risks The likelihood that someone will get hurt now or in the future is high –many times taken by people with a low self- esteem –Cut down on unreasonable risks by taking precautions precautions- planned preventive action taken before an event to increase the chances of a safe outcome

Decision Making Model A five step process used in making important decisions –1. state the situation –2. list the possible choices –3. consider the consequences –4. make the decision –5. evaluate your decision

State the Situation clearly identify the problem or situation ask the following –how much time do I have to decide –why am I in this situation –why is there a decision to make

List the Possible choices think or write out the possible alternative ways to decide this situation

Consider the Consequences Consequences- the result of an action list positive and negative consequences ask yourself –is it safe, how will it impact myself and others, is it legal, it is moral?, ect

Make the decision Decide Own your decision –believe in it –go 100% –feel good about it

Evaluate reflect on decision what did I learn? hindsight (20/20) –would I do it that way again? why or why not?

Decision Making Scenario You and your group will invent a realistic decision faced by an imaginary peer. The situation should be one that someone your age group will have to deal with. On one piece of paper, neatly write the situation. Your group will role play the situation. Each person must have a speaking part. Your group will act out the situation and take us through the decision making process.

Role Play Review List 2 things I learned from the role play my group performed. List 2 things I learned from the role play the other groups performed. Describe the ways that using the decision making model can be a useful tool for you.

Self Esteem Think of one thing you are really good at. Share that with a person sitting next to you.

Self Esteem and Health Self-esteem is the confidence and worth that you feel about yourself It influences everything that you do One of the most important factors in our overall sense of well being It effects your health triangle and your health triangle effects your self-esteem

Self Esteem Self-talk and other talk –Self-talk internal message from yourself (positive and negative) –Other talk—comes form outsiders (positive and negative) –Is your self-esteem based on how you feel about yourself or how you think others feel about you?

Signs of high self-esteem Accept yourself—including weaknesses and handicaps ETC.. Admit mistakes and take responsibility for your actions Willing to try new ideas and take chances and learn new things Not afraid to fail—will participate even if not that good at something Respect self and others!!

The Respect Triangle Respect for self Respect from others Respect for others

Signs of low self-esteem Easily influenced by others People pleasing Approval-seeking Get their identity from outside factors rather from internal factors Worry too much how others perceive them Engage in risky behaviors too get attention Afraid to fail and usually will not even try
