BOOK SYNAPSE UPTON SINCLAIRS GROUNDBREAKING INVESTIGATION OF CHICAGOS MEATPACKING INDUSTRY IS A HORROR STORY OF UNSANITARY CONDITIONS, FOOD POISONING, AND CHILD LABOR ABUSE. THE BOOK PROMPTED CONGRESS TO PASS THE FIRST FOOD - SAFETY LAWS. THE BOOK WAS PUBLISHED IN 1906 AND IMMEDIATELY CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT. HE APPOINTED A COMMMISION TO INVESTIGATE AND THIS LED TO THE PASSING OF THE BEEF INSPECTION ACT. SinclairRoosevelt

The Jungle The Jungle is a fictional story about a Lithuanian family that immigrates to the United States in hopes of a better life. The family moves to Chicago and ends up working in the meat packing industry in a poor area of the city called Packingtown. The main character is Jurgis Rudkus, a hard working immigrant who has high hopes about his new life but learns very quickly how difficult life in the United States will be for him and his family.
