EQ: HOW ARE WE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AS EDUCATORS? N O CHILD L EFT B EHIND {NCLB}

T HE B ACKGROUND I NFO... What is it: An Act of Congress displaying the issues about children's education. Who had the idea: Former President George W. Bush originally proposed the idea immediately after taking office It supports: Standard-Base education reform: Is a system based on the belief that setting high standards and establishing measurable goals can improve individual outcomes in education

T HE B ACKGROUND I NFO... (2) NCLB: The Act requires states to develop assessments in basic skills to be given to all students in certain grades, if those states are to receive federal funding for schools. The Act does not assert a national achievement standard; standards are set by each individual state.

W ORDS to K NOW A.Y.P: Adequate Yearly Progress:  Measurement of how the school performs academically. L.N.D: Level Not Determined: The percent of students who did not receive an achievement level -did not have a valid attempt on any session of the test. To few students or this could mean CHEATING* A.P.R: Annual Proficiency Rate: Measures the skills and expertise academically

W ORDS to K NOW GROWTH + PROF PCT:  Is the percent of students who are Proficient or Advanced plus the percent of students who: are on track using the growth calculation

PRO CON Accountability standards are set and measured annually by each state to foster educational growth and achievement. All results are also annually reported to parents. The Bush Administration has significantly underfunded NCLB at the state level, and yet, has required states to comply with all provisions of NCLB or risk losing federal funds. T HE R EASONING (Pros and Cons)

Where Parkway Stands “…by 2014, the law requires that all students in all subgroups (100 percent) score at the defined “proficiency” level in order to achieve AYP. AYP targets are progressively higher each year, it is becoming more difficult and challenging for school districts across the country to make AYP for all students. For example, in three of the past four years, none of 22 St. Louis County school districts achieved AYP.”

Your assignment Look at the information on the DESE website for Parkway’s AYP.  Follow the directions given and look at the information. Jot down your preliminary conclusions on the state of Parkway North HS. After the conversation with Mrs. Page, complete the questions for the school in which you had your field experience. Type up and submit to your portfolio.
