Is olanzapine safe in pregnancy? Students: Author: Cioban Oana-Dorina Co-author: Dobrin Diana

-Atypical antipsychotics are used for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or autism. IntroductionIntroduction - Atypical antipsychotics are the most commonly used antipsychotics in pregnancy, because they have fewer side effects than classic antipsychotics. -The aim of our study was to see how olanzapine is affecting fetal development on Wistar rats.

What we know ……. Literature report What we know ……. Literature report -A large for gestational age (LGA) infant was delivered by o women diagnosed in her third trimester with delusional and borderline personality disorder and successfully treated with olanzapine [1]. 1.Friedman SH, Rosenthal MB. Treatment of perinatal delusional disorder: a case report. Int J Psychiatry Med. 2003;33(4): There were also tendencies to low birth weight among neonates exposed to olanzapine [2]. -Except for macrocephaly, olanzapine exposure was not associated with anabolic fetal growth in 169 women [3]. -There are no animal studies reported by the literature. 2. In a normal gestation fetuses are symmetrical distributed in the two uterine horns.

What we found …….. Experimental data. What we found …….. Experimental data. A B Resorbed embryos in various developmental stages were seen in the experimental group. On a female rat, cesarean dissection revealed 8 fetuses, 7 healthy and alive and one of them presenting generalized edema and internal bleeding. Perivisceral fat

Conclusion …….. - In rats treated with olanzapine dead fetuses and early or late resorbed embryos were identified along with healthy fetuses; therefore it can be concluded that olanzapine affects the gestation in various developmental stages. - Antipsychotics exposure during pregnancy was not associated with the risk of major malformation in women but our animal study revealed that, in rat, olanzapine may affect gestation.
