Athena Bourka Chemical Engineer MSc Integrated management of bio-waste in Greece - The case study of Athens LIFE10 ENV/GR/605

The project – ATHENS BIOWASTE Project Duration:  Sep 2011 – August 2014 Participants:  NTUA, ESDKNA, City of Athens, Municipality of Kifissia, EPTA S.A. Main Targets - Actions:  Establishment of a separate collection system for biowaste in the City of Athens and the Municipality of Kifissia (pilot area of 3000 inhabitants in each Municipality)  Composting of the biowaste in the MBT facility of ESDKA  Evaluating compost quality  Development of a bio-waste management software tool

Case Study Areas  Athens Area: 3.795ha Population: Density: 207 inh/ha Zone Price: €/m 2  Kifissia Area: 3.403ha Population: Density: 19 inh/ha Zone Price: 1250 – 4550 €/m 2

City of Athens Case Study Areas 1 st area KYPRIADOU 2 nd area GAZI Population: Density: 188 inh/ha Zone Price: 1.500€/m 2 Population: Density: 50 inh/ha Zone Price: 1.100€/m 2 Local Touristic Zone

Municipality of Kifissia Case study - areas  Commercial Centre of Kifissia and N. Eryrthaia  Low density areas: Kefalari & Kastri (15-20 inh/ha),  Medium density areas: Kato Kifissia & N. Kifissia (40 inh/ha)

Methods of Separate Collection  Kerbside Collection with 2-wheel bins lt. ▫ for the whole City of Athens ▫ Commercial areas in Kifissia ▫ Medium density areas in Kifissia  Door-to-door Collection with home Containers ≈30 lt ▫ for low density areas in Kifissia  Door-to-door Collection with 2-wheel bins ≈120 lt ▫ For restaurants and hotels or other major producers

Methods of Separate Collection  Kitchen caddies/bins 7lt  Bags from compostable organic material (like corn or potato starch) or paper  Collection with small vehicle 5m 3 with low compaction  Online fleet monitoring system

Methods of Awareness Campaign Wide dissemination through local press & radio Focused on citizens: ▫ 1 st Phase: Letter of the Mayor to the participating citizens together with an informational leaflet ▫ 2 nd Phase: Distribution of home caddies/bins & bags & one page brochure ▫ 3 rd Phase: Feedback & supply of compost initiation of separate collection

How the project can contribute to the waste management policy in Greece?  By demonstrating to other Municipalities how a separate collection system for biowaste can be planned and implemented  By initiating composting of biowaste in the greater Athens area, taking into account that 3 composting plants are to be constructed within the next years  By evaluating the compost quality in accordance with standards such as Eco-Label correlating it with different collection systems  By producing an innovative software tool which will evaluate the carbon footprint as well as the costs of alternative biowaste collection and treatment solutions.
