Lecture 01 (Tuesday 18 September)

 Lecture 01 What is a TM, some tools Getting started (UI, create a TM, open file, translate, edit, preview)  Lecture 02 Getting started (Project Packages, Analyze Files, Reports, Comments, Display Filter)  Lecture 03 Intermediate  Lecture 04 Intermediate (Tips for the exam)

 TM is a database that stores "segments", which can be phrases or sentences that have previously been translated and aids the translator not to translate the same segment twice.

- Filters (convert the source from its proprietary format to a format that can be read by the TM system) - Segmentation (the smallest translation unit identified by the TM tool defined by segment delimiters such as full stops) - Statistics (most TM tools allow the user to perform a statistical analysis on the TM itself) - Leveraging of Previous Translations (TM tools sometimes allow the user to import previously created translations in the form of saved TMs, glossaries or terminology databases) - Fuzzy Matching (some TM tools allow the user to import previous translations that are percentage matches)

 Concept: - Improve the quality and efficiency of the human translation process - Use a TM file to store “segments” of previous translations for reuse in later projects - A segment is usually a sentence (could also be an element of a bulleted list, header etc.  Process: - Translators translate strings (whether software or documentation-based) from a source language (SL) to a target language (TL) - TM tools store the bilingual pairs that are produced by the human translator during translation (in a table of SL strings with TL strings in corresponding cells) - The TM forms a database of these bilingual segment pairs

 User Interface (UI)  Opening a file  Creating a TM  Translating a file Editor view AutoSuggest Dictionary Auto-Propagating Fuzzy match Spell check Tag display and verification Concordance search  Preview view modes Real-time WYSIWYG

Application Toolbar Navigation Pane Auto- Hide Windows

 View->User Interface Language

 The Navigation pane on the left-hand side features links to popular help topics.  On the bottom of the Navigation pane you find a set of buttons: Home, Projects, Editor, Translation Memories.  By clicking these buttons you can switch between different views.

 The application toolbar buttons provide access to common functionality such as Open Document, Open Package, New Translation Memory, etc.

 Create a directory on your desktop and download from Moodle (course TRADOS_2012_13 training course) the following files: sample_text.docx sample_TM.sdltm

 Click the button New Translation Memory.  In the text field Name of the dialog box New Translation Memory enter a TM’s name.  The Location shows the default path in which the TM file will be stored. Click the button Browse and select your directory TRADOS on your desktop.  Select your SL and TL from the dropdown list.  Check in the TRADOS directory if it is there.  We will NOT use this TM somewhere later on. Dialog box Text field

 Click the button Open Document on the SDL Trados Studio 2009 application toolbar.  Browse to the sample files folder in which the sample document is located.  Select the sample file C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Desktop\TRADOS\ sample_text.docx  In the dialog box Open for Translation, make sure that English (United Kingdom) is selected as the SL.  As TL you select German.  Do not click OK yet…..Go to the next slide

 Under the „Translation Memory and Automated Translation“ click Add->File- based Translation Memory and select the sample_TM from your TRADOS directory.  Then click OK.

Table cell Target segment Source segment IDHeading Paragraph

 Auto-Propagating means that whenever you translate or edit one instance of a segment that is repeated within your document, all other occurrences of the same segment will be updated accordingly.  Try this with the segment ID 40 „Example Text“  To confirm your translation and save it to your TM, press Ctrl+Enter. The following icon appears:

 In the Translation Results window you will find three segments:  On the right-hand side you find: the current segment from the document the current the source segment retrieved from the TM the translation for the segment retrieved from the TM, which has also been inserted into the document

 Click inside the segment, which will insert a translation from the TM. This time you get a so-called context match (CM), which is indicated with a green CM icon in the translation status column.  A context match is better than a 100% match. To be a context match, the TM segment must be a 100% match for the document segment and the two segments must have the same document context. For the document segment and the TM segment to have the same context, they must both have been preceded by the same segment.  In the this example a CM is retrieved, as the TM ’knows’ that in a previously translated document this segment was also found at the beginning of the document.

Correct the spelling mistake as follows:  Right-click the incorrect word.  This opens a context menu with one or more suggested correction.  Pick the appropriate suggestion from the context menu to eliminate the spelling mistake.  You can also add a word to the dictionary.

The segment with ID 39 contains a number of internal tags, i.e. user key tags. You can change the tag display options using the four diamond- shaped buttons in the application toolbar (up right).  No Tag Text: with the first button you can minimize the tags  Partial Tag Text: this button is the default settings and only display the tag names  Full Tag Text: shows the full tag content, i.e. tag names and attributes  Tag Id: shows the tag id; each tag within a document has a unique id

 Mark with the mouse the word F2 in segment 39 in your target segment.  Move the mouse over the tag in the source segment and click it while keeping the Ctrl pressed.

 Tags need to occur in pairs, i.e. an opening tag and a closing tag. Deleting a closing tag, for example, while leaving the opening tag in the translation is likely to cause problems in your target document.  Try to remove a closing tag.  Note that the tag is not deleted. Instead, it becomes transparent. This is what is called a ghost tag. The ghost tag will actually only be removed if you delete its opening counterpart as well..  To restore the tag that you tried to delete, highlight the ghost tag, and click the right mouse button. Then select Restore Tags from the context menu, which will restore the tag pair.

 From the Tools menu select Verify (or F8).  If tag errors are found, they will be listed in the Messages window, which will be displayed instead of Translation Results.

 Select the expression trademark in the source segment ID 13.  Press F3 on your keyboard (or click the right mouse button and select Concordance Search).  This will display all occurrences in the TM that contain the selected expression alongside with the corresponding target segments.

For target segments that are identical or very similar to their SL counterparts, you can copy the source to target:  By usual copy/paste (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V)  Shortcut Ctrl+Ins  Copy Source to Target button:

 Move the mouse pointer over the Preview tab on the top right of the application window.  The Preview window will slide in.  You can generate initial preview or real- time preview of source or target.  You can also refresh the current preview.  If the text is too small, set up 100% from the list down right.

 WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)  Select the menu command File -> View In -> MS Word as Target.  This will open the target document in Microsoft Word.

 When you edit or confirm a segment, the status of the document is updated in the status bar on the bottom of the application window: have not yet been translated are in draft status have been confirmed

 You can add comments to particular segments or strings. This is useful e.g. when you want to:  Flag a translation that you need to check on later  Provide information for the reviewer, proofread, project manager, etc.  Steps to add comments:  Select a word in your translation, e.g. by double-clicking it.  Right-click the highlighted word. From the context menu select Add Comment.  You can add it for your information or as an error (check the different colours).

 Select the menu command View -> Toolbars -> Display Filter.  This will display an additional toolbar.  From the Display dropdown list you can select specific segments (with comments, duplicate, etc.).

 Select the menu command File -> Save as (first time).  SDL Trados Studio 2009 saves all documents in the bilingual SDLXLIFF format (i.e. not in the native format, e.g. DOC or PPT).  To convert SDLXLIFF to DOC select the menu command File -> Save Target As.  This opens the Save Target As dialog box.  Select a storage location for your target file that you can easily find later.

Project packages are created by project managers using SDL Trados Studio Packages are compressed archives that contain the documents and resources required by translators, editors, proofreaders to complete a task:  Source documents to translate (edit, proofread, etc.)  Reference files  Translation memories  Termbases  AutoSuggest dictionaries  Upon opening a project package the files contained therein are automatically extracted, and added to your SDL Trados Studio 2009 environment.

 The Analyze Files Report is displayed on the right-hand side. The left section of the report gives you an overview of all the files contained in the package.

 Read the slides again  Make the Assignment 1 and we can discuss it next time (no need to send it to me)  Collect any questions and ask in the next meeting

  Dictionaries and glossaries: munity/resources.asp munity/resources.asp  AutoSuggest dictionaries: urces/downloads/autosuggest- dictionaries/ urces/downloads/autosuggest- dictionaries/

 Ctrl+Enter: confirm and save the (modified) translation to the TM and go to the next segment.  Ctrl+Ins: Copy Source to Target  F11: full screen of TRADOS STUDIO  F3: Concordance search
