Begin each day writing a response or notes… Write a response to the following statement on pg. 2 of your notes: How do you think school is going for you so far?

Oral Communication Ms. Kropp

Objectives? Students will use the four presentation rules we go over today to present their “I am” poems.

Why should you master public speaking? Builds self confidence Helps you get the job Leadership positions require it Beneficial in all speaking situations if you want people around you to listen to you and take you seriously

Mastering public speaking is not all about the words that come out of your mouth and the ideas you can get across. It is about going on stage and letting the people know who you are.

Four Rules of Presentation Posture - makes you look confident and composed –Keep your weight on the balls of your feet, not your heels –Let your arms hang naturally by your side –Keep feet about shoulder-width apart –Don't lock your knees –Keep your head level and in line with your neck and spine, not pushed forward –Keep your shoulders upright and stand up straight (sixwise.com)

Good Posture a symbol of poise, confidence and vitality. Poor Posture ages you prematurely, saps your energy, causes neck, shoulder and back pain, disrupts your nervous system, and can lead to debilitating injuries.

Segue into volume leads to good voice. improves your air flow by making your trachea straighter. improves the audience's perception of your confidence. (read notes in the box)

Volume the audience can comfortably hear you (not too loud or too soft)

Podium etiquette helps you look relaxed and makes sure you are not distracting. Stand behind the podium, don't lean on it or slouch behind it. If gesturing, bring your gestures up to an appropriate level Try not to grasp the podium with the Vulcan Death Grip - place your hands on the podium in a natural, relaxed way. Do not tap or beat on the podium! (It is not a drum!)

Eye Contact engages your audience. Maintain eye contact by knowing your speech well enough that you need only occasionally glance at your notes. Keep eye contact for two seconds at a time, then move to someone else

For example, imagine your significant other apologizes for breaking your date, but it couldn’t be helped because their tire went flat on a country road and there was no way to get it fixed in time. You happen to notice that the whole while this explanation is going on, your boyfriend or girlfriend is staring at the floor like something very interesting is happening there. How good do you feel about the explanation you have received?

I don’t really have to look people in the eye, right? I can just look above their heads? Yes, you really do have to look people in the eye and no, it’s not enough to simply look around the room.

New Term Etiquette - forms of decorum or rules that we have for behavior, speech or dress Podium etiquette then refers to the rules that we want to follow when using a podium during a speech.
