Pablo Picasso Self-Portrait, 1907

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor. He is best known for founding a style with Georges Braque called CUBISM. 1881-1973

What is Cubism? A form of art where the artist turned natural organic shapes into geometric shapes to create a work of art. This form of art was created by Picasso and other abstract artists in Paris during the 20th century.

Geometric Shapes Organic Shapes http://www.artsconnected.org/toolkit/index.html Geometric Shapes Organic Shapes

Cubist Portraits Picasso used two different angles when he created a portrait. He used a profile view and a frontal view of the face. He always drew a line in the middle to separate the two views.

Profile You can only see one eye, one ear, and half of the mouth. The nose is sticking off the face with only one nostril showing. You can see the outline of the face.

Frontal You can see both eyes, both ears, and the whole mouth. The nose is in the center of the head and you can see both nostrils. You can not see the outline of the face.

What is different about these two paintings? Lydia Leaning on Her Arms, by Mary Cassett 1879
