COMENIUS REGIO PROJECT : SAve EU-Science for Active Citizenship in Europe Flaviana Sortino Liceo Linguistico “A.Pesenti” di Cascina TOWARDS A SMART SCHOOL 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015

WHAT IS A SMART CITY? Flaviana Sortino Liceo Linguistico “A.Pesenti” di Cascina “A city performing in a forward- looking way in economy, people, governance, mobility, environment and living, built on the smart combination of endowments and activities of self-decisive independent and aware citizens.” (Giffinger et al., 2007) 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015

WHAT IS A SMART CITY? “We believe a city to be smart when investments in human and social capital and traditional (transport) and modern (ICT) communication infrastructure fuel sustainable economic growth and a high quality of life, with a wise management of natural resources, through participatory governance.” (Caragliu et al., 2009) Flaviana Sortino Liceo Linguistico “A.Pesenti” di Cascina 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015

According to the mentioned definitions we can identify 3 elements charcterizing the Smart City: 1)Utilization of networked infrastructure (including ICT) to improve economic and political efficiency and enable social, cultural, and urban development; 2)Business-led urban development; 3)Social sustainability ( social cohesion and a sense of belonging) and environmental sustainability (ecological and green implications of urban growth and development). Flaviana Sortino Liceo Linguistico “A.Pesenti” di Cascina 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015
