WEEK THREE The Hero’s journey

Lesson 11- Opening RL 6.1, RI 6.1 THINK-PAIR- SHARE ARCHETYPE- a character or story line that repeats again and again over time Read page 86 from “I shook my head” to “Chiron calls them archetypes. Eventually, they re-form.” THINK-PAIR- SHARE How is the meaning of archetype that we learned connected to this idea of the minotaur as an archetype?

Lesson 11- SLT I can get the gist of an excerpt from The Lightening Thief. I can answer questions using evidence about an excerpt from The Lightening Thief. I can select evidence from two texts that shows how Percy is on a hero’s journey. THINK-PAIR-SHARE Based on today’s SLT, what do you think we will be doing in today’s lesson?

Lesson 11- Close reading pp. 78-82- Chapter 6 What does it mean to closely read a text? How do you start? What do you do next? The Lightening Thief p. 78 Read from the bottom page of 78 starting with “As we got closer…” to page 82 “…Annabeth is waiting for us.” Stop every few paragraphs and write the gist on a sticky note and place it in your book.

Lesson 11- close reading pp. 78-82 Text Dependent questions Text dependent questions Read the question so you know what to look for when you re-read. Re-read the passage with the question in mind. Use an sticky note to mark places where you may find answers. Answer the question using the evidence from your sticky notes. What new and surprising sights does Percy encounter in this passage? Choose one and describe it using evidence to support your answer. What does Percy learn about Chiron in this passage? Cite evidence to support your answer.

Lesson 11- connecting percy’s experience Your graphic organizer includes the stages of “The Hero’s Journey” which also show up in the passage of The Lightening Thief you read earlier. Review these sections from “The Hero’s Journey” to remind yourself what happens in each of those stages. Think about how the stage of the hero’s journey shows up in the passage of The Lightening Thief. Choose a specific scene from the passage on pp. 78-82 that shows Percy experiencing the three different stages found on the graphic organizer. Go back to “The Hero’s Journey” and choose a quote that clearly connects to Percy’s experience. Complete the graphic organizer using evidence from the two texts.

Rate your confidence of this learning target.. Lesson 11- closing Exit Ticket Think about the learning target “I can choose evidence from both The Lightening Thief and “The Hero’s Journey” that shows how Percy is on a hero’s journey.” Rate your confidence of this learning target.. 1 3 5 Easy difficult challenging Homework Read chapter 7 and use sticky notes to mark places that answer the question… How are Percy’s experiences in this chapter align with “The Hero’s Journey”?

Lesson 12 I can select evidence from both The Lightening Thief and “Thte Hero’s Journey” that shows how Percy is on a hero’s journey. I can write a paragraph describing how Percy’s experiences align with “The Hero’s Journey.” What does the word “paragraph” mean to you? What does a GOOD paragraph include? Find your favorite part of chapter 7. Mark it with a sticky note.

Writing- Percy’s Experiences Practice for ASSESSMENT in lesson 13 Focus on pages on 93-95 (chapter 7) Focus on four different parts of “The Hero’s Journey” Entering the Unknown Supernatural Aid Allies and Helpers The Road of Trials Directions on the next slide…

Directions for Writing Assignment Reread the four parts of “The Hero’s Journey” before reading pages 93- 95 in The Lightening Thief” Choose ONE experience from pages 93-95 and match it with a stage of the hero’s journey Gather evidence (actual quotes and words from the text) in The Lightening Thief Gather evidence (actual quotes and words from the text) in “The Hero’s Journey” Use your information to help you write your paragraph answering the following question: HOW DOES PERCY’S EXPERIENCE MATCH OR RELATE TO ONE OF THE STAGES OF THE HERO’S JOURNEY?

Peer feedback Complete the peer feedback checklist Provide two suggestions for improvement Identify one good part of the paragraph Review/explain your thoughts with your partner about his/her paper

Closing Homework Read chapter 8 Share Out Answer- How are Percy’s experiences in this chapter aligned to “The Hero’s Journey? Share Out What is a challenge Percy faces? How does this challenge Percy as a hero?

Lesson 13 Assessment Use pages 107-112 (chapter 8) Reread these four parts of “The Hero’s Journey” before reading pages 107-112 Entering the Unknown Supernatural Aid Allies and Helpers The Roads of Trials I can cite text-based evidence to support an analysis of literary and informational texts. I can write organized informative/explanatory tests that convey ideas and concepts. I can use evidence from a variety of texts to support analysis and reflection.

Lesson 13- end of unit activity Back to Back/Face to Face When I say “GO” you should silently walk around the room at a slow pace When I say “STOP” you should stop, find the nearest person next to you and stand back to back I will ask a question that you should think about for 15-20 seconds I will say Face to Face and you should turn around and share your answers/ideas for one minute When I say “GO” the process starts again
