CULTURE Question In his graphic novel American Born Chinese, author Gene Yang uses his fictional protagonist Jin to represent how an Asian American might feel about his cultural heritage. In rejecting his culture –insisting his new friend Wei Chen “speak English” rather than acknowledge the Mandarin Chinese language being spoken by the newcomer (37), Jin (Yang) shows how language can be a barrier to feeling accepted by a wider group, choosing to reject a language he has grown up with.
