Welcome to the ESL Center and ESL 403

Goals ESL 403 – Spring 2015 Improve your writing Write paragraphs Meet with tutor Practice grammar Do well in your ESL class

1.Write paragraphs done during lab class, not at home! print 2 copies get red ESL Center stamp on it fill out self-editing worksheet for HW 2.Meet with tutors to revise the paragraph revise paragraph for HW 3.Do grammar practice exercises on the computer link and assignments are online done during class, not at home! do NOT your instructor your results print out “Scorecard” at end of semester 4.Participate in workshops on writing topics take notes during the workshops 5.Keep a portfolio of your work from class What will you be doing in ESL 403?

No FaceBook No or text messages No surfing the internet. If you use the Internet for activities not related to this class, you will be asked to leave the ESL Center and you will not get attendance credit for the class hour. (There is no way to make up this time) What will you NOT be doing this semester in the lab?

You must attend the same class days and hours every week. There are no books or lab fees for this class. Class is taken for Pass /No Pass, or letter grade Some general information

1.Laptops ESL 403 website Exercise Central website (grammar exercises) Microsoft Word (write paragraphs) 2.Printer To print 2 copies of each paragraph – no other assignments! Tools for you to use in Center

Tools YOU need to bring Every time you come to the ESL Center, you must bring the following: 1.Your PCC photo ID card (Lancer Card) 2.Your portfolio folder, with your ESL 403 Assignment Sheet 3.Your flash drive to save your paragraph

Who Can Help Me During the ESL Lab Class? Your lab instructor : who will also be your faculty workshop instructor Peer tutors: who will help you with paragraph assignments The lab technician/front desk staff: who will help you with computer questions

Your colored assignment sheet lists the assignments to complete each time you come in for class. Front desk stamps it when you arrive and when you leave. Instructor will sign it after tutoring or workshops. It helps record your grade, so don’t forget to bring it! What’s an Assignment Sheet? You will get your sheet now. Fill out the top section now and bring it next week and every week.

What if I lose my Assignment Sheet? Do not lose your assignment sheet! It is your proof for attending the class and for getting credit at the end of the semester. If there is any problem with the electronic record of your attendance, your assignment sheet will prove that you have been attending class.

The portfolio is a folder where you keep the documents and your work from the class. You must get 75% or better in order to pass ESL 403. You will turn it in at the end of the semester to your ESL 403 instructor. You might give it to your 122 instructor at the end of the semester if he/she asks for it. It will be graded for completeness on the last day of ESL403 class. What’s a Portfolio? Recommended folder: 2-pocket folder or 3-ring binder

1.Assignment Sheet 2.Your paragraph packets 1.Brainstorming 2.both drafts 3. self-editing worksheet. 3.Your notes from Brainstorming workshop 4.Exercise Central Score-card (end of semester) 5.Portfolio Checklist/Grading sheet (end of semester) What goes in Portfolio?

One of two ways you will be graded in this class You must get 75% or more to pass ESL 403. You cannot miss 3 classes. What’s a Portfolio Checklist/Gradesheet?

1. Writing Paragraphs 45 min only – no extra time Follow proper formatting (see last page of syllabus for a sample – next week we’ll discuss it more) Brainstorm on another piece of paper Save to flash drive regularly Print 2 copies in the lab (take laptop to printer and plug in) Staple brainstorm to the back of 1 copy. Have both copies stamped at the front desk. Take home with you and fill out self-editing sheet; staple to the front of paragraph+brainstorming

Always save some time to print! If the printer is not working: - Use printer in LAC or in computer lab on 1 st floor. - You will need a Printing Venda-card! Remember: always save some time to print!

Printing With a Vendacard To get a Vendacard, you insert a $1.00 bill into one of the five Card Vending machines. (The card includes five 10 cents a page.)

2. Tutoring Tutoring is one of the most important services that we offer. You will meet with a different tutor each time to look at your paragraphs. Three-four students will be tutored at the same time. The next time you have tutoring, all of you will see another tutor together, not the same one from the last tutoring session.

Walk-in tutoring at times outside of this lab class during ESL Center open hours can not be used as a substitute for attending your regular lab class hours.

When You Meet With a Tutor Your assignment sheet tells you when you will meet with the tutor. 1.Faculty member will sign your Assignment Sheet (only if you are prepared and have done the HW). 2.You will work together with your tutoring partners and the tutor on your paragraph. 3.For homework, you need to revise and re-type the paragraph that you worked on with the tutor.

How do I get a Faculty Signature? Faculty member will sign your Assignment Sheet before tutoring starts if: You have brainstorming, stapled to the paragraph You have done the self-editing sheet, and it’s stapled You have two copies of the paragraph, with ESL Center red stamps on them You have done the revision HW when assigned

3. Exercise Central (grammar exercises) 45 min only – no extra time Use your login and password Some exercises are easier than others Don’t go too fast! Don’t professor the results Need 80+% high score Can repeat exercises Print Scorecard at the end of the semester.

We will take roll electronically each class by swiping your I.D. card when you enter and exit the ESL Center. Attendance

Absences Come every week during your registered lab hour. If you are absent more than twice, you will receive a “No Pass” grade for the class.

Class will end 5 minutes before the time listed in the Schedule of Classes and you can check out by swiping your Lancer Card. Bring your Assignment Sheet to the front desk for check-out stamp. Do not leave class without checking out! Checking In and Out

Keep Track of Your Time! You are expected to stay for at least 50 minutes every time that you come to the ESL Center during your registered lab hour. At the end of the semester, if you don’t have hours of attendance, you will not pass this lab class.

More than 5 minutes late= absent from the class. You can still come in and do your work You can not scan your card = no credit for that class time No attendance stamp “IN” on your Assignment Sheet Coming Late

Don’t use up your 2 absences in the first half of the semester because you may need them later. There are no make-up classes for the ESL Center lab classes. Look at Syllabus what you need to do if you miss a class so that you don’t miss points!

If you stop coming to the lab class, you will not automatically be dropped, so you need to do it yourself. If you don’t drop yourself, you will get a NP grade or an F instead of a “W” (withdrawal) for ESL 403. Check the deadlines for dropping this class! Dropping ESL 403

Like all labs on campus, the ESL Center has certain rules that we must ask you to observe.

Change the computer system settings Install or download programs Damage the computer hardware Bring in ANY food or drink (not even bottled water) Take a break longer than 5 minutes If you take a break, bring your Assignment Sheet to the front desk. While in the ESL Center, please do not :

Please turn off all cell phones before coming to class; a vibrating phone is still a distraction! You may not text message or talk on your cell phone while working in the lab.

Due to insurance regulations, no children or other guests are allowed in the ESL Center

Homework for next week: 1.Get a portfolio folder 2.Bring Lancer ID card + flash drive to class. 3.Read the syllabus carefully! 4.Do HW

Any questions?
