ABOUT Dustbin for home and office use Meant for simple and convenient usage Contains features - Storage Space - Rubber Rim - Compressor

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD… Problems encountered - Overflowing dustbin - Inconvenient to clear bin - Unsightly for other people. - Not easy to place plastic bags

FEEDBACK FROM PEOPLE…

“To throw our things in a dustbin we need a plastic bag. We have to keep on wasting plastic bags everyday or we can create something bio- friendly." -Student A “It is not easy to replace the plastic bag, and if you don’t the bin would overflow” -Student B Picked from 20 people we asked

PREVIOUSLY… What they said: The Hooks may not be able to support the weight of the plastic bag with paper inside. What we did: Replaced the hooks with the rubber rim What they said: Similar project done What we did: Went online to search, but there was none

STORAGE COMPARTMENT Contains plastic bags At the bottom of the Dustbin -Dustbin contains a “false” bottom Advantages No need to waste time finding another plastic bag for replacement. The plastic bags need not be replaced regularly. Extra space at the bottom makes the dustbin convenient for users who usually do not have the habit of storing plastic bags.

“It is not easy to replace the plastic bag, and if you don’t the bin would overflow.” -Student B “When the bag gets full you bend down ad pick it up to throw it away then you have to bend down again and put a new plastic bag that's bad for the back.” -Housewife A

COMPRESSOR(MAIN) Allow more rubbish to be stored in the bin Done by pushing the button on top of the dustbin Advantages Users need not clear the bin so often The bottom of the compressor can be unscrewed off and cleaned Need not be done via a complicated process Eco-friendly as it saves more space for the litter so that the plastic bag can be more effectively used.

H OW I T W ORKS

“To throw our things in a dustbin we need a plastic bag. We have to keep on wasting plastic bags everyday or we can create something bio- friendly." -Student A "The plastic bag is troublesome to be constantly disposed of, because it overflows quickly“ - Housewife B

RUBBER RIM Allows user to place the plastic bag to the dustbin and ensuring that the plastic bag would not slip or tear. The force of compression is spread evenly on the rim so that the plastic bag wont tear. Advantages Plastic bag is more secured Able to support more weight

H OW I T W ORKS

“It is not easy to replace the plastic bag, and if you don’t the bin would overflow.” -Student B “The plastic bag is sometimes not attached properly, so some rubbish might leak out.” -Housewife C

TARGET AUDIENCE Design for home and office use Not suitable for liquid and metal waste Aimed at housewife and office workers

SIMILAR PRODUCT “STOMP DUSTBIN” -Works by stomping on it -Crushes the entire dustbin and compresses the rubbish inside

“God forbid you put anything liquid or near liquid in there. Sure you could stomp it, but you’d have to spend the next hour cleaning old salsa off the wall across the room!” “I must agree. This just isn’t practical enough. Its a nice idea but a lot of aspects haven’t been thought through.” “And how do you propose to keep all the smashed up trashy bits out of the corrugations?” “Don't you think a bag might split when you are crushing things inside it??” “That’s exactly what i thought when I saw it. It would be very hard to get the bag out of every single corrugation.” Comments on the Stomp Dustbin

COMPARISON “Stomp Dustbin” “Convenient Dustbin” Materials quite expensive Very messy (plastic bag may burst) -has no limit to compression Made of cheap materials Compressor only compresses a certain amount -does not burst the plastic bag
