Welcome to HSPA Prep Zero Period It’s important >>>>> Graduation!!! Everyone get a folder, put name on it. (Make folders for absent people to help take attendance.

This is how this class will go… FIRST 2 WEEKS: We will do a new lesson everyday and finish each class with an open-ended question. (10 mins) And go over that open-ended the next day, after I look at it. LAST TWO WEEKS: We will take sample test every other day. One day take it, the next day go over it. The sample test will be exactly like the actual. (40 minutes – work on our timing) YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO MISS ANY CLASSES!!!!

YOU MUST BRING CALCULATORS EVERDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I created a website for our class!! So if you are sick and miss a class, or you want/need extra study materials look on this site: z/olc/teacher.aspx?s=94

Lesson 1 - REAL NUMBERS (as opposed to fake numbers?)

Real Numbers REAL NUMBERS -8 -5, … 61 49% π ,769,852, Can you tell me another???

Types of Real Numbers Natural Numbers(N): Natural Numbers are counting numbers from 1,2,3,4,5, N = {1,2,3,4,5, } Whole Numbers (W): Whole numbers are natural numbers including zero. They are 0,1,2,3,4,5, W = {0,1,2,3,4,5, } W = 0 + N

What are integers? Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites. Examples of integers are NOTICE NO FRACTIONS OR DECIMALS!!

Rational Numbers A rational number is a real number that can be written as a fraction. A rational number written in decimal form is terminating or repeating.

Examples of Rational Numbers 16 1/ … - 3/4

Irrational Numbers An irrational number is a number that cannot be written as a fraction of two integers. Irrational numbers written as decimals are non-terminating and non-repeating.

Examples of Irrational Numbers Pi π

WHOLE Numbers REAL NUMBERS IRRATIONAL Numbers NATURAL Numbers RATIONAL Numbers INTEGERS

Are they Rational or Irrational??? a) Irrational b) Irrational c) Rational d) Rational e) Irrational

Write all classifications that apply to each number. 5 Real, irrational –12.75Real, rational 16 2 whole, integer, rational, real = = Real, integer, rational

Practice Order these from least to greatest:

7. At midnight the temperature is 8°C. If the temperature rises 4°C per hour, what is the temperature at 6 am? How long Is it from Midnight to 6 am? How much does the temperature rise each hour? 6 hours +4 degrees (6 hours)(4 degrees per hour) = 24 degrees 8° + 24° = 32°C Add this to the original temp.

8. A deep-sea diver must move up or down in the water in short steps in order to avoid getting a physical condition called the bends. Suppose a diver moves up to the surface in five steps of 11 feet. Represent her total movements as a product of integers, and find the product. W h a t d o e s T h i s m e a n ? Multiply (5 steps) (11 feet) (55 feet) 5 * 11 = 55

On your own:

Practice Open-Ended Question (10 mins) “Keeping Records” Eric has a part-time job at the deli. His responsibility is to keep track of the sales of some items. He earns a salary and an additional commission on what he sells. During one week he sold the following: 25 pounds of boiled ham at $7.99 per pound 17 pounds of potato salad at $2.50 per pound 6 boxes of american cheese at $14.95 per box 2 whole salamies at a total price of $ dozen rolls at $3.00 a dozen A.) What was the total from the sale of all the above items? B.) The sale of boiled ham is what percent of the total sales? The sale of potato salad is what percent of the total sales? The sale of american cheese is what percent of the total sales? C.) Eric earns a 4% commission of the total sales. How much commission does he earn? He also earns a salary of $150 a week. What is Eric’s total pay for that week? D.) If Eric is offered another job for a salary $175 a week without commission, what are some factors he should consider in deciding to take the new job or remain with the job he currently has. Note to teacher: Put answers up on overhead next to screen
