Subcommittee of the P-20 Council

Overview of the Project The ESEA Flexibility Proposal described the plan to establish a subcommittee of the P-20 Council to develop a definition of College and Career Readiness April 2012 – P-20 Council voted to establish a subcommittee and nominations for the committee were received through June 15, Subcommittee will meet, develop, and present to the P-20 Council a proposed definition for College and Career readiness to be adopted by Delaware Utilizing the viewpoints of a committee of stakeholders and examples from other states, entities, and educational groups the definition will be drafted, receive feedback, and ultimately be presented to the Council for adoption

Examples of College and Career Readiness Definitions Achieve: College and Career ready refers to the content-knowledge and skills high school graduates must possess in English and mathematics – including, but not limited to reading, writing, communications, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem solving – to be successful in any and all future endeavors Kentucky – Readiness for college depends on more than English and mathematics knowledge; to be successful after high school, all graduated must possess the knowledge, habits, and skills that can come from a rigorous, rich, and well-rounded curriculum Common Core State Standards – college readiness means that a high school graduate has the knowledge and skills in English and mathematics to be placed and succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college courses without the need for remedial coursework Association of Career and Technical Education – career readiness defined to include strong core academic skills that will launch students into good jobs or entry level college work without remediation and have the ability to apply academic skills in the context of the job they do; employability skills including adaptability, collaboration, and critical thinking; and technical skills that are specific to particular fields, such as those required for industry licensure or certification

Timelines and Deliverables Committee was contacted this week and our first meeting was scheduled for July 17 th 3 – 5pm at the Townsend Bldg in Dover Committee will meet monthly to develop the definition for College and Career Readiness Present proposal at meeting on October 16, 2012 P-20 Council will consider recommendation and act on the proposal
