Uranium Mining and Remediation Exchange Group, UMREG2012 Vienna 7 – 8 November 2012, DEVCO Nuclear Safety 2 BACKGROUND – TACIS COOPERATION European Commission first addressed the problem of legacy uranium mining sites in 1995 through a Technical Assistance to the Commonwealth Independent States (TACIS) project that covered uranium mines and mills in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. The project gave a first assessment of remediation options and their ranking. Other TACIS funded studies followed which focused on specific sites and areas. An example is the 2003 TACIS project "Remediation of Uranium Mining and Milling Tailing in Mailuu-Suu District of Kyrgyzstan" that gave comprehensive analysis of measures for risk mitigation and proposed sustainable remediation options.

Promotion of a higher level of nuclear safety, radiation protection and the application of efficient and effective safeguards in third countries. Replaces the TACIS Nuclear Safety Programme.
