The Concept of Research Development – An Idea Whose Time Has Come Presented to Faculty Senate August 12, 2013

 The funding climate has become extremely competitive  In response, nationwide, institutions are beginning to create research development groups  In 2010, the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) was formed– to support professional development, enhance institutional research competitiveness, and catalyze new research and institutional collaborations within its membership (~500)

 A team of three professionals  A career research development/research administration professional  An MD  A PhD scientist  We serve as "rainmakers" who facilitate team science in response to the external funding landscape

 Most of the Basic Science 1 Administrative Service Group (ASG)  Biochemistry & Molecular Biology  Neuroscience & Cell Biology  Pharmacology & Toxicology  Sealy Center for Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics  ~ 75+ faculty members

 Primary support from SCSBMB (>50%)  Partial support from each of the three academic departments we serve

 Monitor Agencies for Trends  Which programs are flat, shrinking, cut, or “up and coming”  Get funding trend information from UTMB faculty who serve as panel reviewers  Target Funding Opportunities  Review all major funding announcements to find the best opportunities for our faculty

 Agency Spin  Target grants to the reviewers and convert grants’ presentation from one agency “spin” to another  Program Project Organization  Help organize multi-PI/institutional/country center and program project grants  Grantsmanship - Technical Review  For compliance with solicitation, institution requirements, and IP issues; for spelling and grammar  Limited Scientific Review  To be sure the project is on target with its aims, and that the aims are reasonable for the hypothesis  Supplements  Help prepare supplements to add students and projects

 June 2012-May 2013 (our first year) – ~80 proposals submitted with our support  Thus far, results are encouraging  By the end of 2013, will be able to compare success ratio

 Anesthesiology  Center for Addiction Research  Institute for Translational Sciences  Microbiology & Immunology  OB/Gyn  Pediatrics  Sealy Center for Environmental Health & Medicine  Others?
