Presentation transcript:

What is Phenology?

Phenology is the study of the timing of plant and animal life cycle events. Nest Building Leaf Out Flowers Blooming MigrationEmergence

Phenology happens everywhere.

Anyone can observe phenology.

Why should humans monitor Phenology?

Factors in the environment can cause the timing of life cycle events to change. TemperaturePrecipitation

Why is Phenology Important?

Humans can use our knowledge of phenology to make predictions. When should we hold the Cherry Blossom festival? When should fall leaf clean-up be scheduled? When will allergy season begin? When will maple sap run?

Changes in phenology will affect ecosystems and the humans that depend on them.

More information is needed… Citizen scientists can collect useful observations that will increase our understanding of phenology. A better understanding can lead to better management decisions.
