Sims Middle Aviation Unit Power of Flight Mrs. Locklin and Mr. Blackman

Forces of Flight Drag- Friction force Thrust- Forward engine force Lift- Upward Buoyant force Gravity- Downward force REMEMBER: A Force is a Push or a Pull.

Four Forces of Flight Drag opposes thrust. Drag opposes thrust. Gravity opposes lift. Gravity opposes lift. Drag Thrust Gravity Lift

Newtons 2 nd law of motion Newtons second law states that force is equal to mass times acceleration. Force = Mass X Acceleration Acceleration= Final Velocity – Initial Velocity Time Time Velocity = distance divided by time in a given direction

Example Problems Force A Plane with a mass of 4000 Kg accelerates at a rate of 40 meters per second per second. What is the thrust of the plane? A Plane with a mass of 4000 Kg accelerates at a rate of 40 meters per second per second. What is the thrust of the plane? Force = mass times Acceleration Force = 4000 Kg. X 40 meters/sec 2 Force = Newtons

Example Problem Acceleration A plane traveling 400 meters per second increases its velocity to 600 meters per second in 10 seconds. What is the acceleration of the plane? A plane traveling 400 meters per second increases its velocity to 600 meters per second in 10 seconds. What is the acceleration of the plane? Acceleration= Final Velocity - Initial Velocity Time Time Acceleration = 600m/sec – 400m/sec 10 sec 10 sec Acceleration = 20 meters/ sec 2

Example Problem for Velocity A plane travels 600 miles due East in 1.5 hours. What is the velocity of the plane? Velocity = Distance in a given direction Time Time Velocity = 600 miles due East 1.5 hours 1.5 hours Velocity = 400 miles per hour due East

Example problems 1. A plane with a mass of 3000Kg is accelerating at a rate of 30 meters per second 2. Calculate the force on the plane. 1. A plane with a mass of 3000Kg is accelerating at a rate of 30 meters per second 2. Calculate the force on the plane. 2. A plane with a velocity of 50 meters per second increases its velocity to 60 meters per second in 10 seconds. Calculate the acceleration. 3. A plane travels 400 miles due East in two hours. Calculate the velocity of the plane.

Answer to problem one Force = mass X Acceleration Force = 3000Kg. X 30 Meters/sec 2 Force = Newtons

Example Problem 2 Acceleration = Final velocity – Initial velocity Time Time Acceleration = 60m/sec – 50 m/sec 10 sec 10 sec Acceleration = 1 meter/sec 2

Example Problem 3 Velocity = Distance traveled Time Time Velocity = 400 miles/ 2 hours Velocity = 200 miles per hour due East
