Objectives  To discuss and ask for advise from WGISS’  Issues Data Management (USGS Perspective) Data Access (Data Democracy Portal)  To Update the meeting on current activities

Background o Data Democracy was initiated in 2008 o End to End process, aiming to strengthen the EO data utilization cycle by o broadening data in-and situ data/information access o increasing data dissemination capabilities o sharing software tools, and o transferring the technologies o To end users, especially in developing countries o CEOS continues to support this project (2008-present) o Under purview of CEOS Troika o In 2009, approved as a GEO task in GEO Work Plan o CB-09-05e: Infrastructure Development and Technology Transfer for Information Access -Data Democracy, led by CEOS o Part of GEO Ministerial CBC Showcase

Data Management o USGS Perspectives on the CEOS Data Democracy Initiative USGS Perspectives on the CEOS Data Democracy Initiative o Which technology should we apply such that o the utility of common storage o hosting facilities, and o super computing facilities can be possible o Mirror site are not applied in this project

a bunch of products from different providers Software B (send request to provider) Software A (downloadable) Software D (send request to provider) Software C (downloadable ) Software E (downloadable) Software F (send request to provider) Course B Course A Course C Course D Dataset G (20 images) Dataset H (10 images) Dataset A (catalog) Dataset B (catalog) Dataset C (10 images) Dataset D (200 images) Dataset E (catalog) Dataset F (catalog) Products are available out there but hard to find !

Data Democracy Portal o Need one place where users can easily access to those products given by CEOS community o Put all accumulated products in one place o By using a search engine which can initially extract product’ s keywords, thus, users could find data/ documents/ software that they really look for o No actual images contain in a server but the linkage which guides users to the actual product location o CEOS members could update the list of products at anytime when they have a new product comes to the program o Troika closely works with SEO

Portal Structure

Data Access o Upload tool for product providers o keywords shall be requested from products’ providers o use as inputs for search engine o Standard but simple o Search Engine o The more keywords provided, the better results o Suggestion and Recommendations from WGISS

Current activities o Preparation for Showcase at the GEO Ministerial o Training and Workshop on “EO Technology for Climate change” o June 7-10, 2010, Bangkok Thailand o To introduce users in SE Asia on how to o Access and make use of Satellite data for Climate change applications o Lecturers from CEOS (USGS, INPE, JAXA, GISTDA), CMA, and AIT
