Using Devices at the Appropriate Times and in the Appropriate Ways ●Scenario: Students in class check personal messages on their device every thirty seconds. Some play video games while they are supposed to be learning. ●Modeling Appropriate Behavior: During school hours, staff should only use their devices for official purposes. They should call attention to student misuse when they see it. Digital Etiquette

Using Proper and Formal Digital Communications when Appropriate ●Student to Teacher (sent at 1 am): o hey mr. smith. I re-did an assignment and turned it in but you haven’t updated your gradebook. i need you to do it asap so my parents don’t yell at me. - sam ●Modeling Appropriate Behavior: o Use formal greetings and proper grammar in all digital communications with students o Ask students who communicate in the manner shown above to re-write them properly if they would like a response. ●As with traditional manners and etiquette, students must always be aware of how their behaviors impact others ●But they must have good role models to follow Digital Etiquette Remember Your Manners!

●When student information is provided online (e.g., through a parent portal of a student information system or forms on a website), be aware that not all will be able to access the information ●When moving to online opportunities, (e.g.,student enrollment online) it’s important to offer other options: ○Kiosks ○Community centers ○Open labs may be necessary Digital Access Moving to digital systems in your community

●Sharing files from the internet - whether… o music, o video, or o written work ●… is illegal but students are not always aware of this or the ramifications of their action. Digital Law

Sharing other people’s personal information without permission is invading the privacy of that individual and can lead to legal action. Digital Law

Did you know… ●If a student sends a sexually explicit picture of themselves or others, it can lead to charges of ‘distribution of pornography’? ●If criminally charged and found guilty, you will be a registered as a sex offender, even if 16 or under? ●Receiving that picture, even if unwanted, can lead to criminal charges of possession of pornography? Whether these actions take place on or off campus, school staff should model and teach appropriate digital behaviors in order to foster responsible digital citizens. Digital Law

Practice Activity: What Would You Do? You frequently use group projects in class. However, during the last project three issues arose that you would like to make sure do not happen again. Take a look at these issues and explain how you could respond to each question, adjust your instruction, and/or model appropriate behavior for students: ●Etiquette: students had trouble communicating face to face, since group members were constantly looking at their devices to answer messages or surf the web ●Access: a student approaches you at the end of class and tells you that he/she will be unable to complete the project for your class that requires the use of technology because they have no computer access ●Law: students are given your cell phone number for evening extra help sessions. However, students shared your cell phone number with students not in your classes
