NTLB Tech 2004 A technology cruise into Literacy!

Agenda for our Cruise Introduce you to best practices of Technology and Literacy Introduce you to new technology learning tools that you’ll have in your classroom Remind you of that excitement in teaching with technology

Our Digital World

The Digital World Radio…..38 years to reach 50 million users TV……..13 years to reach 50 million users Web…….4 years to reach 50 million users Napster…2 years to reach 50 million users

Did You Know? A greater percentage of kids age 9-12 use the Internet than do adults Age The average age of a Sarasota educator is 46 All NY McDonalds are being equipped with hotspots Most Starbucks are being hotspotted The main electronic tool used by teens is not the phone, the video game, the television …..but the computer.

Making Computers work in Education

Computer: (noun) A person who tabulates numbers; accountant; actuary; bookkeeper. -- Merriam Webster Dictionary (1946) Has it impacted literacy???

Our children are the natives of the digital age, we are the digital immigrants. Alan November, Futurist

Has literacy been impacted by technology? How about a new language? BTW - by the way FWIW - for what it's worth IANAL - I am not a lawyer LOL - laughing out loud NRN - no reply necessary ROF - rolling on the floor [laughing] RTFM - read the f*****g manual

Many have misread the potential of technology through the years. This too will pass…

This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us. -Western Union internal memo, 1876.

Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons -Popular Mechanics, forecasting the relentless march of science, 1949

I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. -Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943

I have traveled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last out the year. -The editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall, 1957

But what... is it good for? -Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, 1968, commenting on the microchip.

There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." -Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977

Technology Changes Word processing skill based Stationary computer center in each room Limited access for students Limited access to online information for students Digital expression and inquiry based learning Technology where you need it and when you need it with wireless laptop carts Teacher laptops as a main productivity tool Online tools as part of the daily curriculum

Transformation Through Mobile Technology

Mobile wireless technology makes economic common sense! Cost for a lab room out of circulation Cost for electrical Cost for data Cost to let it sit until the tech integration time

Transformation of Textbooks Beyondbooks.com

Transformation of District and State Visions AT THE KEYS: Maine Gov. Angus King looks at Heather Gilliam’s laptop at Bath Middle School. Maine wants to give a laptop to every seventh- and eighth- grader. TROY R. BENNETT/THE TIMES RECORD/AP

Who has embraced this transformation. Henrico County, Virginia Maine Michigan Manatee County, Fl ….and Sarasota’s Phoenix Academy

Has it made a difference for them?

Envision where… laptop mobile wireless technology would reach into the classroom experience. A vision which has 1 cart for every two teachers. every teacher is equipped with a laptop with access to their resources at both school and home. every educator, teacher and administrator, models 21st century skills to our kids.

Envision where… every classroom is equipped with a video projector instead of a TV. classrooms where teacher can access video segments “on demand” to accentuate the learning experience. standardization of resources and skills expectation reaches all schools.

Envision where… classrooms use a Mimio Boards which turns whiteboards into interactive boards. training is available for teachers in all areas of technology integration and is delivered during the duty day or online 24/7. the impact of the Sarasota digital divide is discussed and a solution offered. Let’s level the digital playing field for all.

Envision where… technology is used by all classrooms to make a significant impact on learning. students leave us ready for the expectations of the digital world, just as they are ready for the demands of the educated world. Sarasota becomes known as a 21st century model of a digital learning community.

Is this the challenge of only the ITF?

Is reading only the challenge of the reading teacher?

Digital Tools…… Uncover Student Genius

One more Techno impact on Literacy….

The Top Signs Your Has Been Hacked And Is Being Used By Someone Else Your spouse says, "Honey, why is an 18- wheeler from Amazon dotcom backing into our driveway?” One Secret Service agent is sitting on your head while another is slapping cuffs on you. Apparently, your flame war with Don Corleone at mafiadotcom is about to turn ugly.

The Top Signs Your Has Been Hacked And Is Being Used By Someone Else When you log on, your computer says, "You've got lawsuits!" Sotheby's says the Rembrandt is yours and that you now owe them $71,000,000 and change.

The Top Signs Your Has Been Hacked And Is Being Used By Someone Else "The resistance welcomes your involvement. Your contact information has been forwarded to a local insurgent who will bring supplies and reinforcements to you immediately.” Your wife calls you at the office to report that Pogdi, your Pakistani mail-order bride, has arrived.
