Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos1 The future evolution of TERENA and its collaboration with DANTE and the NREN PC Dorte Olesen

GA 21, Rhodos2 What does TERENA bring to its members? Providing technical/administrative support to task-forces and similar groups in technical areas of common interest to the membership Providing project-officer support to technical projects Organising workshops on (new) topical technical subjects of common interest to the membership

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos3 What does TERENA bring to its members? Providing an environment for fostering new initiatives of the European research networking community Organising the annual TERENA networking conference Organising an annual seminar for the TERENA General Assembly Providing support in various ways to less advanced networking organisations

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos4 What does TERENA bring to its members? Providing (technical and managerial) advice and assistance to TERENA member organisations, and promote knowledge transfer Promoting members’ interests by representing the common interests and opinions of the membership in contacts with relevant organisations Providing support to the TERENA GA, TEC, TAC and TTC

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos5 What does TERENA bring to its members? Providing a TERENA website with up-to-date information Offering meeting facilities in the TERENA offices to members.

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos6 Can TERENA do more? Publish a short monthly executive newsletter to the GA? Organise practical, small projects of immediate benefit to members (such as those of TF-PR and the TACAR initiative)? What would YOU like your organisation to do for you?

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos7 Collaboration with DANTE A working group consisting of members from the TEC and the DANTE BoD started work in February Two meetings have taken place, but the work has not yet been completed – due mainly to the workload in connection with preparation of the GN2 proposal

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos8 Collaboration with DANTE Overall impression: the collaboration is good and in many respects it is quite clear who takes care of what. Still, the study should be finished, in order to get a clear overview of the division of tasks, also outside the GN2 project.

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos9 Membership of the NREN Consortium GN2 is a broader project than GN1 The EC has a strong wish that the European network should be seen as an entity, encompassing both the international backbone and the national networks

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos10 Membership of the NREN Consortium Research, development and foresight studies are now also part of GN2, not independent projects TERENA will coordinate a series of activities. DANTE is overall coordinator of the project There is an impressive overlap between the members in the NREN PC and the members of the TERENA GA

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos11 Conclusions and recommendations The DANTE-TERENA collaboration study should be finished in September – so conclusions can be discussed at the October GA TERENA should start a monthly ”executive” newsletter immediately

Dorte Olesen GA 21, Rhodos12 Conclusions and recommendations The GA should consider formulating some ”challenges” for NRENs and the joint European networks ?
