Self-care is unique to every individual. Source: e

Definitions Self-Care Is the combination of three processes: Self-awareness Self-regulation Balancing connections between self, others, and the larger community Source: National Association of Social Workers. (2008). Professional Self-Care and Social Work.

Definitions Compassion fatigue (or secondary traumatic stress) A natural, predictable, treatable and preventable unwanted consequence of working with suffering people, that is, the cost of caring Source: National Association of Social Workers. (2008). Professional Self-Care and Social Work

Self-Neglect Lack of self-care in terms of personal health, hygiene and living conditions.

Definitions Self-Care is NOT Self-Pampering – massages, facials, pedicures, etc. Self-Indulgence – avoidance of the effortful and substitution of quick and easy antidotes

Healthy Coping Healthy coping are the skills, methods, or tools we use to deal with stressful situations Getting and maintaining good coping skills takes practice and time Over time, it gets easier

Why Healthy Coping? All of us will experience stress In order for us, as providers, to do our jobs we need to know how to deal with stress communications You must have ongoing communications with your supervisor, not just during stressful situations and ▫ Individual, group supervision, and team meetings ▫ Case conferencing ▫ Mentoring

Lack of Healthy Coping Skills What could happen if we lack healthy coping skills? ▫ We can experience burnout ▫ We are not able to do our job (poor performance) ▫ Unhealthy relationships at work ▫ Co-workers have to pick up the slack (resentment) ▫ Clients do not receive appropriate services

Healthy Coping Good coping skills can include; ▫ Meditation & Relaxation Techniques ▫ Time to yourself ▫ Physical Activity ▫ Reading ▫ Humor

Foundation & Background The concept of Hierarchy of Needs was first introduced by American Psychologist Abraham Maslow in a 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation” This hierarchy suggests that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. This hierarchy is most often displayed as a pyramid.
