Peregrine the Martian Lander Assembly Instructions Mission to Mars 2008

Lander Overview Peregrine

Some Assembly Required Peregrine

Tools Required “green” #1 Robertson screwdriver “red” #2 Robertson screwdriver 3/16” flathead screwdriver ½” open-end wrench 9/16” open-end wrench 1 small flat nose pliers 1 small pencil (< ¼” dia.)

Denis’ Basic Assembly Rules DO NOT OVERTHIGHTEN !!! DO NOT FORCE PIECES TOGETHER !!! Use the right tool for the right job Take your time Ensure that you have all the parts that are required Follow the instructions When in doubt, ask ! It’s not rocket science, or is it ?

Lander Part List 3 sets of leg parts (LG-1 to LG-3) 1 Lander base 5 Photovoltaic panels (PV1 to PV5) with mounting hardware 1 rover ramp with hardware 2 antennas 1 lander cam with mounting hardware 1 rover cam 1 power cord

Landing Gears (LEGs) - 1 There are 3 landing gears Each landing gear 3 main components: –Leg strut –Leg pad –Leg mount Each landing gear is labelled The landing gear is assembled and attached with nuts, bolts, screws & wires.

Landing Gears (LEGs) Start by supporting the lander’s body, so it is 5 ½” off the ground. 2.Now attach the pad to the strut. 1.Use the ¼” machine screw and hexagonal nut for this purpose. 2.Slip the strut between the 2 strut mount on the pad. 3.Align the holes with a pencil. 4.Slip the screw into the hole and finger tight the hexagonal nut onto the screw. 3.Attach the strut/pad assembly to the lander’s body. 1.Use the 3/8” bolt and hexagonal nut for this purpose. 2.Slip the strut between the 2 mounting tabs on the lander’s body. 3.Align the holes with a pencil. 4.Slip the bolt into the hole and finger tight the hex nut onto the bolt.

Landing Gears (LEGs) Secure the restraint wire to the undercarriage of the lander’s body with the screws that are already in place. 1.Wind the wire’s end clockwise around the screw’s body. 2.Tighten the screws with the #2 red Robertson screwdriver. 5.Now tighten the hex nuts that attach the strut by half a turn with the appropriate open-end wrench. 6.Repeat these steps for the other 2 landing gears. HINT: Righty-tighty, Lefty-loosy

PV Panels PV Panels in total Each have 2 hinges that need to be fastened to the lander’s main body. Each require 2 wood screws to be mounted on the frame.

PV Panels Each panel is labelled and must be fastened on the corresponding side on the lander’s body. 2.Using the #1 Robertson screwdriver (green) to fasten the screws to the lander’s main body. 3.Do not OVERTHIGHTEN the screws and ensure that they are perpendicular to the body of the lander. 4.Start by fastening the screws at each outside edges of the hinges. 5.Then put in the screws on the inside edges of the hinges. 6.Repeat these steps for all 5 panels.

Rover’s Ramp - 1 The rover’s ramp is a double length panel. It is hinged in the middle so it can be folded down to the size of a single panel.

Rover’s Ramp The rover ramp’s position is labelled on the lander’s body 2.Using the #1 Robertson screwdriver (green) to fasten the screws to the lander’s main body. 3.Do not OVERTHIGHTEN the screws and ensure that they are perpendicular to the body of the lander. 4.Start by fastening the screws at each outside edges of the hinges. 5.Then put in the screws on the inside edges of the hinges.

Lander’s DSN- 1 The lander’s Deep Space Network requires 2 antennas. They are mounted on the top of the lander’s canopy.

Lander’s DSN- 2 1.Take the antenna and screw it onto the mounting flange. Finger tighten only. 2.Slide the cap onto the antenna’s body. 3.And push it down so it meets with the surface of the canopy. 4.Repeat the same steps for the other antenna. The antenna has 2 parts, the antenna itself and a cap that covers the connection.

Lander’s CAM- 1 The lander’s CAM is mounted on the under- carriage of the rover’s canopy. It has a unique articulated joint that allows it to tilt forward and back to adjust its viewing angle. To adjust the angle, you will need to loosen the wing nut, adjust the angle, then re- tighten the wing nut.
