Believers Today, Learn from Believers of the Past! Redeemer Lutheran Church Sunday, March 17, 2013

Welcome to Redeemer! Lent is a time of reflection and repentance for sin. Today God shows us the serious consequences of disobeying his commands. But he also shows us the Savior who overcame sin for us and gives us eternal confidence.

For Our Guests If you have questions, let us try to help. Speak with an usher, greeter, or the person next to you. If you’d like to learn more about Redeemer and its ministry, please talk to Pastor Wolfe or a church member after the service.

Children’s Message Each week, our younger worshipers are invited to the front of church before the sermon hymn to hear a special message for them from Pastor Wolfe.

Need to Know what’s going on? Check the church calendar, Get access to sermons, and more. Our church website has the info you need right at your fingertips

Prayer before Worship Father in heaven, forgive my sins of the past week. Help me today to turn aside from temptation and worldly desires and return to you. Bless my songs of praise today and lead me to your righteousness and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Please be courteous and silence all pagers and cell phones. Thank You

My Hope is Built on Nothing Less CW #382 Verses 1-4 Text: Edward Mote, Setting: MAGDALEN Tune: John Stainer,

Verse 1: My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare to make no other claim But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

Verse 2: When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

Verse 3: His oath, his covenant and blood Support me in the raging flood; When ev'ry earthly prop gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

Verse 4: When he shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in him be found, Clothed in his righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before his throne.

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

Opening Verses Pastor: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. All: And also with you.

Confession of Sin Pastor:Our Savior Jesus Christ commanded baptism when he said: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” All of us are born into this world with a deep need for baptism.

Confession of Sin Pastor:From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus took away our sin by giving his life on the cross. At our baptism he clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and gives us a new life.

Confession of Sin Pastor: Our sinful nature need not control us any longer. We recall what baptism means for our daily lives as we speak these words:

Confession of Sin All: Baptism means that the sinful nature in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death.

Confession of Sin All: It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

Confession of Sin Pastor:As baptized children of God we confess our sins: All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions.

Confession of Sin All: I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

(Pastor announces our forgiveness) All: Amen.

Sacrament of Baptism Pastor: In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have brought this child to be baptized. Jesus told us: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

Sacrament of Baptism Pastor: It is in baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children. By the power of God’s Word, this gracious water of life washes away sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.

Sacrament of Baptism Pastor: Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart X to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ.

Baptism of Ryan Dallas Knell

Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ: Our Lord commands that we teach his precious truths to all who are baptized. Christian love therefore urges all of us, especially parents and sponsors, to assist in whatever manner possible so that Ryan may remain a child of God until death. Exhortation

Pastor: If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, as God gives me strength. All: Yes, as God gives me strength. Exhortation

Pastor: Let us pray: (Pastor says prayer) All: Amen.

God’s Word to His People Isaiah 43: The Israelites rejected God’s plan of grace

Psalm #73 All ♫ Refrain:

All ♫ Verses: I am always with you, O Lord; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.

All ♫ Verses: Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

All ♫ Verses: my flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and portion forever.

All ♫ Verses: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm #73 All ♫ Refrain:

God’s Word to His People Luke 20: 9-19 The parable of the tenants
