What is sexual health education? Sexual health education addresses: Reproductive health, interpersonal relationships and communication, affection, body image, gender roles, abstinence, disease and pregnancy prevention options.* Lessons are taught K-12, and should be designed to meet the needs of students at the various age and grade levels. Is sexual health education required in Florida schools? Yes! Required as Family Life instruction, a component of Comprehensive Health Education under Florida State Statute (2)(n). Parents can choose to opt their children out of the sexual health component of comprehensive health education.

Why do we need this instruction in Florida schools? 63% of 12th graders (approximately 102,100) have had sexual intercourse at least once. 25% of 12th graders (approximately 39,600) have had sex with multiple partners (four or more during their lifetime). 56% of 12th graders (approximately 91,600) reported they had engaged in oral sex at least once. Why do we need this instruction in Florida schools? In 2011 AIDS related illnesses were the second leading cause of death of Black women ages The majority (82%) of female adolescents who were reported with HIV infection were infected via high risk heterosexual contact. Floridians between the ages of 15 and 24 represented only 13 percent of Florida's population in 2011, but accounted for 70 percent of reported cases of Chlamydia infections.
