Shanghai

A Brief History Shanghai doesn’t have the long history that most of China’s major cities have. Until the 1800’s, it was really just a small town on the coast.

Concession Era 1842: The British establish a concession by forced treaty with the Qing Dynasty after China loses the first Opium War. Concessions were governed by the occupying country and were untouchable by Chinese law. The French, Americans and Japanese soon followed the British in establishing territories in Shanghai.

WWII 1930’s and 40’s: Shanghai grew into the jewel of Asia. But WWII hit Shanghai hard. 1 st, Japan bombed and invaded Shanghai. 2 nd, The concession era comes to an end and communism takes control of China and the city by 1949.

Shanghai booms again 1978: The advent of Deng Xiaopeng's open door policy allowed a commercial revival to take place in Shanghai. Created Special Economic Zones for foreign companies 1978: China is the 32 nd largest exporter 1989: China is the 13 th largest exporter Present: China is 1 st !

Today, changes are still happening 2013: Shanghai Free Trade Zone is created
