Robert Sabuda Brian Russell

Exam expectations Issues associated with designers are regularly tested in the written paper. You should be able to describe the work of Robert Sabuda who is an author, illustrator and pop-up book designer. He taught himself paper engineering and has designed and produced pop-up books including The Mummy's Tomb and also The Knight's Tale.

Robert Sabuda Sabuda was born in Michigan USA in 1965 He was skilled as an artist from a very young age, and attended the Pratt Institute in New York City. His specific interest in 3-D paper engineering was sparked by a book he received that was illustrated by Vojtěch Kubašta.

Robert Sabuda Sabuda’s interest in children's book illustration began with an internship at Dial Books for Young Readers while attending the Pratt Institute. Initially working as a package designer, he illustrated his first children's book series, of "Bulky Board Books", in 1987. Wide recognition only came his way after he started designing pop-up books for children in 1994.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz A spread from The Wonderful Wizard of OZ by L. Frank Baum and art by Robert Sabuda.   Tucked in a pocket on the page are green sunglasses to view the emerald city (and everything else) with.

Alice in Wonderland The book consists of 7 spreads with breath taking super-size pop-ups and additional pop-ups contained within mini story books. Special effects include printed foil and acetate pull-tab scenes.

Matthew Reinhart Reinhart is the co-creator with Robert Sabuda of the New York Times best-selling three-volume pop-up series Encyclopedia Prehistorica. The team’s latest pop-up series is Encyclopedia Mythologica which leads off with Fairies and Magical Creatures

Dragons and Monsters Master paper engineers Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda unfold the legends and lore from around the world to reveal a host of stunning creatures such as Bigfoot, Medusa, a Kraken and much more.

Fairies and Magical Creatures The wings of fairy queen Titania actually flutter, the royal cloud palace Alfheim emerges to a stunning height before your eyes. Each page contains flaps that open even more incredible folded wonders that emerge in intricately marvellous fashion.

Conclusions His mantra is “It is harder to make it pop flat than it is to make it pop up”
