Module 1: Scholastic Management Suite

Objectives Participants will: Increase their understanding of the Scholastic Management Suite (SMS), the management system for SRI. Increase their understanding of how to access and use student reports. Increase their understanding of how to customize student settings and edit student information. Increase their understanding of the troubleshooting tips for SRI software management.

All About the SMS The SMS is the central management component that collects and organizes performance data across Scholastic programs. The SMS manages the data associated with a class, groups, or individual students using Scholastic programs. The SMS enables you to: Easily manage rosters and access database information. Customize Scholastic programs. Track performance and generate reports for students, classes, and groups.

All About SMS Logging in 1. Select your name from the list of teachers. 2. Click OK. 3. Enter your password.

Getting Around the SMS The Main Screen Buttons Tabs for Students, Classes, Groups, and Teachers Main Display

Getting Around the SMS Enrolling Students in SRI 1.Click the Students tab in the main display. 2.Click the checkbox next to the student you want to enroll. 3.Click Edit.

4. Click the pull-down menu under Enrolled In: and select SRI. 5. Click the Enroll check box. Getting Around the SMS Enrolling Students in SRI

Try It Now: Enroll Students in SRI 1. Click the Estimated Reading Level button. 2. Choose the appropriate grade level from the pull- down menu. 3. Click OK.

Enrolling Students in SRI Set an Estimated Reading Level Enroll 2 or 3 students in SRI. Estimate each student’s reading level. Familiarize yourself with the tabs on the SMS main screen, and use them to arrange your students’ enrollment data.

Enrolling Students in SRI Setting Up Classes 1. Click the Classes tab. 2. Click Add. 3. Choose your name from the Teacher pull- down menu. 4. Enter a Class Name.

Enrolling Students in SRI Setting Up Classes 5. Click the Edit Student List Button. 6. Click the check boxes next to the student names you want to add to the class. 7. Click OK to return to the Edit Class screen. 8. Click Done.

Enrolling Students in SRI Selecting Test Settings 1. Click the Students, Classes, or Teachers tab. 2. Click the check boxes next to the student, group, or class names for whom you would like to customize settings. 3. Click the Settings tab. Choose SRI from the pull-down menu to access the Settings: SRI screen.

SMS Reports Overview

Running Reports Using the Reports Tab 1. Click the Reports button. 2. Choose SRI Reports from the pull-down menu. 3. Click the name of the report. 4. Adjust the time period. 5. Click Preview.

Running Reports Viewing and Printing On-Screen Reports 1. Click the Print button along the top of the report. 2. Click OK on your computer’s print window to print a report. 3. Click the Close button along the top of the on- screen report to return to the SMS Reports screen.

Try It Now: Run and Print a Report Run an SRI Report using several different time periods, including a custom time period. Use the buttons to toggle in between reports for your selection. Print the report, and save it for future reference.

Module 2: Scholastic Reading Inventory

Objectives Participants will : Increase their understanding of how to administer the SRI interactive assessment. Increase their understanding of the uses and limitations of a Lexile measure. Increase their understanding of the uses and limitations of SRI test results. Increase their understanding of how to select and analyze the various data reports generated by SRI.

Using SRI SRI tests reading comprehension and helps teachers place students in programs, target students’ needs, and track reading growth over time. The test is computer adaptive, which means it adjusts to the students’ responses. SRI has a bank of over 3,000 test questions, based exclusively on passages from authentic children’s literature. Lexile ® measures align with grade levels that teachers can use for instruction and for matching students to texts.

Using SRI What SRI Results Tell You Each time your students take an SRI test, the results are captured by the SMS. You can use the SMS to generate reports to include the following student data: Lexile Measures and Performance Standards Reading Level (On, Above, or Below Grade Level) Lexile ranges for Easy, On-Level, and Challenging texts Normative Data (Percentile Rank, NCEs, and Stanines) Recommendations for helping students meet grade-level expectations

Preparing Your Students to Take an SRI Test Make sure the classroom is quiet. Review test-taking strategies: –Look for important ideas. –Use context clues. –Use skips. –Take breaks. Ask students to bring something to work on if they finish early.

The SRI Student Experience Signing In to SRI Students: 1. Click the SRI icon on the desktop. 2. Enter name and password to sign in.

Students: 1. Click up to three of the colored circles to select reading interests. 2. Click Next after you have made your selections. The SRI Student Experience Choosing Reading Interests

The SRI Student Experience Taking the Practice Test Students: 1.Read the passage. 2.Read the cloze question. 3.Choose the best answer. 4.Click Next to move on, or Skip to pass on the question.

Try It Now: Take an SRI Test Sign In to SRI and choose reading interests. Take a Practice Test and an actual test. Familiarize yourself with answering and skipping questions. Generate and print a Recommended Reading List.

Using Lexiles in the Classroom Online Resources

Use the Book Expert to select books that represent different Lexiles. For read alouds, select books at a higher Lexile level. Assemble students into small groups according to their SRI scores and interests. Guide students to select books that match their Lexile level. Encourage students to read the leveled books on their SRI Recommended Reading Lists. Recognize the limitations of Lexile measures and provide students with differentiated reading options. Q: How long does this test take? A: Our research shows that the first time students take the test, they need approximately 20 minutes to complete it. Subsequent testing sessions will likely be shorter. SRI Frequently Asked Questions
