Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Connective, alphabetical spelling text (50 words or phrases). What do all of these words or phrases have in common? Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Objective: To improve responses when comparing texts/ideas You have 2 minutes to write down as many connectives as possible. Compare your list to the person next to you. Did anyone think that their partner had written down a non-connective word or phrase?

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Join together the following pairs of sentences. Try to change meanings by experimenting with different connectives. Objective: To improve responses when comparing texts/ideas 1.I like walking. It is raining 2.Mr Ramsey is great. His lessons are interesting. 3.The colours are bright in item one. They are dark in item two.

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?” Write down the above question from paper one. What are the ‘key words’ in this question? Where could you make errors, when answering this? In your working groups brainstorm potential presentational devices. In your working groups you have 2 minutes to make notes about Item 1 … … then have 2 minutes to make notes about Item 2 … … then have 3 minutes to look at them together and discuss potential answers to the above question – use connectives in your discussions.

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Now look at the following answer, supplied by a candidate. The wikepeida advert has a white background. This is boring and this means that this page is just for info. But there is blue words for some of the main words. The page is busy with lots of writting. There is columns down the left and there are subheadings with bullet points underneath and on the right there is some graphs showing you the effects of global worming. The global worming page has a personfryed picture of an earth. It is smilling which means that it is happy. It is colourful so we look at this because the background is white. The background we can see the sun shinning and the pictures on the right are like the writing on the left and lines are used to show this. There some subheadings but these used big like words like words “neautralise” and this is hard for people like me to read, so it is not for teenagers. The hypalinks are well explained. “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?”

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices In small groups, discuss the positive features of this response (there are a few!). “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?”

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Positive features Some relevant presentational devices are discussed (colour, columns, illustrations etc.). More than 3 devices are considered. Some references to “effectiveness”. Target audience is identified. “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?”

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Now, discuss what advice you would give to this candidate to improve their work? “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?”

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices Make the response directly comparative. Do not waste time analysing more than 3 devices. Avoid referring to language devices. Seek alternative interpretations, to suggest alternative audience reactions. “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?” Apart from the ‘obvious’ spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, they could …

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices The above question is worth 6 marks out of 27. How long will you spend planning? How long will you spend writing? Using both web pages, write an improved response to the question: “Compare the effectiveness of three presentational devices in Item One and Item Two. How are these devices used to target audiences?”

Key Stage 4 Paper 1: Comparing Presentational Devices In your groups recap the improvement strategies, without looking at anyone’s work. Now swap your work with a partner and provide some comments that you think will help to improve the quality of their response. Feedback this improvement to another person in the class (this cannot be the owner of the essay!) Return to the person whose work you are seeking to improve and give them the improvement strategy. Objective: To improve responses when comparing texts/ideas
