OCEAN LITERACY AWARENESS WORKSHOP OCEAN LITERACY Awareness Workshop August 27 th, 2010

AGENDA Welcome & refreshments Overview of the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy Introduction to the Ocean Literacy Project Handbook Interactive web resources Q & A and next steps

WELCOME The Ocean Literacy Programme is in it’s 3rd Year. Many of you may have attended training at the Little Cayman Research Centre in 2009 and may already use Our Ocean Planet: a Teacher’s Manual for Ocean Science. This year, we have focused on providing resources for you in the classroom, to better support Ocean Science in our schools. Ocean Literacy is understanding the influence of the ocean on you and your influence on the ocean. Mission: To ensure that all students of the Cayman Islands are Ocean Literate by the age of 12

THE 7 PRINCIPLES OF OCEAN LITERACY Overview: a scientific approach provided by Valentino Lee Presentation of Handbook and resources Interaction and feedback from teachers

THE OCEAN LITERACY PROJECT HANDBOOK The Project Handbook has been developed with the following objectives in mind: The Project Handbook uses the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy as a scientific structure, to help you better manage each lesson project and to focus on the ‘bigger picture’ The Project Handbook helps highlight relevant topics over the whole spectrum of the 7 Principles, providing relevant resources The Project Handbook is designed to be flexible, to provide ideas and support… not to be a ‘one fit for all’ solution

STRUCTURAL OVERVIEW

PROJECT HANDBOOK DESIGN The Project Handbook has been designed to not only map out a complete project through Key Stages 1-3, but to also provide an in-depth focus on each individual Key Stage It is completely flexible, offering a complete structure which can be used at will The topics here are recommendations only; obviously they can be interchangeable with other ocean- based topics

OVERVIEW – KEY STAGE 1

OVERVIEW - KEY STAGE 2

OVERVIEW - KEY STAGE 3

NATIONAL CURRICULUM - REFERENCES The Project Handbook is not intended as an official National Curriculum document At the beginning of each Key Stage section, we have suggested National Curriculum topics which can be covered within the project The more National Curriculum requirements are met, obviously the more beneficial the project will be in terms of meeting students’ learning needs Example: see page 10 in the Project Handbook

A STANDALONE PROJECT? We have designed a 6-week Ocean Literacy project, based on the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy The project is designed to be flexible Individual Principles may be used for smaller projects The resources listed in the Handbook may be used to help bolster a current project (such as “Habitats” or “The Deep”) The longer the project, the better the chance of a student’s understanding of Ocean Literacy

RESOURCES - OVERVIEW Main resource: Web resources: our goal is to move away from printed materials where possible Please provide feedback (both good and bad), along with resources you already use and those that can be made available to other teachers

RESOURCES - PRINT The following local texts are referred to in the Project Handbook: Our Ocean Planet: A Teacher’s Manual for Ocean Science (provided by CCMI) Coral Gardens: A Teacher’s Guide (provided by the DOE) Endangered Caribbean Sea Turtles: An Educator’s Handbook (provided by WIDECAST) Wondrous West Indian Wetlands: A Teacher’s Resource Book (provided by WIWD Working Group of the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds) They should be readily available in your schools

RESOURCES - ONLINE The Project Handbook refers to many online resources; therefore, access to the web is crucial The National Geographic website provides excellent resources, especially short video clips which are perfect for more investigative / research-based learning ocean-now/why-ocean-matters.html

NEXT STEPS Key teaching staff will be further trained by CCMI, to provide continued support in schools as ‘Ocean Literacy experts’ Key teaching staff will be involved with an IB working group, to further support Ocean Literacy within the IB format Key teaching staff will be asked to provide feedback on the Project Handbook, to further enable resource development. How can YOU get involved???
