Presentation transcript:

Thursday 29 th January 6.30

Changes !!! New Curriculum introduced in September Increase in expectations Content that used to be identified as level 3 and in the Key Stage 2 curriculum is now part of the Key Stage 1 curriculum. Similarly content from Key Stage 3 is now part of the key Stage 2 curriculum. Emphasis on learning for mastery and problem solving Allow pupils to deepen their understanding rather than fast forwarding them.

Key Stage 1 Mentally adding and subtracting pairs of two digit numbers. Fractions are now more than introducing ½ and ¼ it now includes 1 / 3, ¾ and equivalence in fractions Counting in 3’s ¾ turns Know 2, 5 and 10 times tables

Key Stage 2 Inclusion of Roman Numerals Tables to 12x 12….. end of year 4 Use of calculators has been removed Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions Use of formulae to calculate the area of different shapes Volume Finding missing angles including those on a straight line and vertically opposite Constructing pie charts Algebra to be used in all areas of maths

Year Objectives Look at the expectations for each year group Look at the child friendly versions.

SATS Proposed changes to the SATS testing at Key Stage 1 and 2

Sats Key Stage Sats will remain the same for this year but will change next year Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: Multiple choice True or false Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem

SATS Key Stage The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise two papers: Paper 1: arithmetic, worth 15 marks and taking around 15 minutes. Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks and taking 35 minutes, with a break if necessary. There will be a variety of question types: multiple choice, matching, true/false, constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method). Children will allowed to use a number line, hundred square, abacus and ruler, but not a calculatornumber line

Calculations. In Key Stage 1 pupils are provided with a range of strategies to solve calculations e.g number lines In Key Stage 2 formal written methods are introduced earlier than before with addition and subtraction methods being taught in Year 3 Examples of written methods on hand-out to take away

What can I do at home? Lots of fun activities on our website to practice key information e.g tables Also Woodlands Junior School website has activities which cover all the key areas of maths including SATS revision. Time to look at the sites at the end.

Singapore Approach to teaching maths Because of the new higher expectations in the National Curriculum which requires learning for mastery, the East Midlands Maths hub are exploring the Singapore Bar model which aims to underpin the new requirements as a valuable problem solving tool. Attending workshop in March to see how this works.

The end Any questions? If you want to know how it is organised in your school please speak to the relevant staff. Look at any resources Thank you for coming.
