The APP scheme of writing was developed to give a more comprehensive view of a child’s written language skills. There are 8 different assessment foci covering all aspects of writing – each with targets corresponding to an attainment level. At least 3 pieces of writing are needed to form a good judgment of a child’s progress against these targets. The APP grids can highlight any barriers a child may have to reaching the next sub-level or level.
