British School of Ulaanbaatar ‘To educate global citizens in pursuit of personal excellence in an ever evolving community to become lifelong learners’ Writing: Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) Unlike maths or science, a child’s true level of writing is difficult to assess through an end-of-term (or end-of-year) test. The APP scheme of writing was developed to give a more comprehensive view of a child’s written language skills. There are 8 different assessment foci covering all aspects of writing – each with targets corresponding to an attainment level. At least 3 pieces of writing are needed to form a good judgment of a child’s progress against these targets. The APP grids can highlight any barriers a child may have to reaching the next sub-level or level.

British School of Ulaanbaatar ‘To educate global citizens in pursuit of personal excellence in an ever evolving community to become lifelong learners’ Writing: Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) Sentence structure, punctuation Sequencing, paragraphs Purpose, ideas, audience Vocabulary, spelling, handwriting

British School of Ulaanbaatar ‘To educate global citizens in pursuit of personal excellence in an ever evolving community to become lifelong learners’ Writing: Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) Children’s writing is moderated and cross-checked against others in their class and across primary using the APP grids. Children’s writing targets are set to help them reach the next level! Please encourage your child to read or write in English as much as possible at home!
