TYPES OF ARTICLES Articles Definite (the) Indefinite (a, an)

Indefinite Articles ‘a’ and ‘an’ are called ‘Indefinite Articles.’ – ‘a’ is used before singular countable nouns starting with a consonant sound. e.g. a book, a kite, a university – ‘an’ is used before singular countable nouns starting with a vowel sound. e.g. an apple, an orange, an hour

Definite Article ‘the’ is called ‘Definite Article.’ It is used before – a) particular nouns e.g. He is the doctor who treated my father. b) some proper nouns e.g. the Pacific Ocean, the Nile, the Himalayas c) the names of the holy books e.g. the Quran, the Bible

d) the things unique of their own kind e.g. the sun, the moon, the earth e) the superlative degrees of the adjectives e.g. He is the tallest boy in the class. f) the ordinal numbers e.g. She was the first one to arrive in the hall.

No articles are used for – a) uncountable and abstract nouns e.g. sugar, water, kindness, wisdom b) languages e.g. English, Urdu, French c) relations e.g. father, mother, brother
