Results of the Crusades The Christians are pushed out of Jerusalem. Muslim Turks are the victors, they take over The Byzantine Empire in 1453 and start the Ottoman Empire.

Effects of the Crusades Negatives: – Weakened the Byzantine Empire, the Pope and nobles. – Kings become stronger. – Leaves a legacy of bitterness between Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Positives: – Stimulated trade throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. – Europe learns a lot from the Muslims.  The Crusades helped bring an end to the “Dark Ages”

Activity #2 We will read Results of the Crusades in Europe together – We will answer questions 1-3 together

Summary 1.Why did the Crusades have positive and negative effects? (Provide examples) 2.Would you consider the Crusades to be a success or failure? Defend your answer.

1. A chance to leave the manor. 2. An opportunity to gain power & wealth 3. Fight a war “for God” 4.Kill any other non-Christians SSAP 286

The Crusaders can be considered hypocrites because Christianity teaches that “thou shall not kill”, however they are celebrating the murder of Muslims and Jews.

Muslims still consider Saladin a hero because he was able to recapture Jerusalem from the Christians.
