Guilds An organization of individuals in the same business or occupation of its members. (people who have the same sort of job) Skilled artisans, wheelwrights, glassmakers, bakers, tailors and more! Guilds standardized everything: bakers had to sell bread at a standard size and weight.

Guilds THINK (on right side): So how did this effect Europe and the middle ages? What happens to society and culture?

Commercial Revolution Expansion of trade and business Opened up trade routes to Asia through middle east. Increase of trade allows for many things to happen ◦ Businesses to form ◦ Merchant class = new non-ruling upper class ◦ People went back to towns and cities ◦ Created more “stuff” for people to have

Revival of Learning People started to go back to school: Muslims allowed Europeans to re- discover ancient texts ◦ Refocus on Greek and Roman thinking and philosophy Muslims share new technology ◦ Lateen – triangular sail on boats that increases speed and sensitivity to wind. Creation of Universities and schools

Revival of Learning THINK (on right side): So how did this effect Europe and the middle ages? What happens to society and culture?
