The Five People You Meet In Heaven Direct & Indirect Characterization

Assignment: While reading Five People, your job is to find quotes that tell and show us important information about each of the five people Eddie meets in heaven. If you haven’t done so already, it’s probably a good idea to start marking these quotes in your book using post-it notes—as you come across them in your reading.

Characterization We can learn the following about a character through the information provided in the text: Physical traits Mental, emotional, and moral traits

Direct Characterization The narrator (or sometimes another character) tells us what a person is like Be wary of information from characters—make sure that they are not lying because they are biased toward the person they’re telling us about

Indirect Characterization Requires the reader to look for clues that reveal a character’s traits and motivations To fully understand a character and a story, we should look at What a character says What a character does What a character thinks What others say or think about the characters and how they react to them
